I have been faithfully taking my 10 mg Atarax for about 5 weeks now. It does help. Still makes me a little sleepy. But now my regular ole allergies have started up and the Atarax does not help. Have had one killer sinus headache for over a week. Yes, I am going to get checked for an infection. I was okayed to take Zyrtec as well by both primary care Dr. and Uro but it has made me way too sleepy. Anyone on Atarax taking another allergy med that doesn't make them too sleepy? I was thinking about asking about Allergra. Singulair bothers me.

Hi,
I had the same problem when I had to take Atarax and Zyrtech for severe hives. I could not stay awake and was very spaced out.
I switched to Claritan which seemed to be less sedating. Maybe you could ask your doctor if that would work for you.
Good luck,
Laurie

Hi Cheryl,

You could also ask your doctor about upping your dosage of Atarax. My understanding is that 10 mgs is the pediatric dosage amount. My daughter is 6 and originally did well on 10 mgs of Atarax. Allergy season caused her to flare so Dr. Parsons this year told me I could up her Atarax dosage all the way up to to 20-30 mgs if needed during allergy season. So if a 6 year old can be on a higher dosage, I'm sure you probably go higher too obviously:) I guess it all depends on if you could handle a higher dosage without be sedated further though. I thought this side effect usually wears off???

I take 30mg a day. Usually 10 in the am and 20 before bed. I am asleep in about 30 minutes and don't have trouble getting up in the morning.

I take 25 mg of Vistaril (the sister of Atarax) about 6pm and then I take my 10 mg Zyrtec at bedtime. I do really well with both of them, and the groggies have left the building, lol. I just went back on my Vistaril after a trying-to-concieve break, then being pregnant then breast-feeding, lol. And usually the first week of being on it I have the groggies, but then they disappear...

I too have good luck with the Vistaril, it just doesn't help my nasal allergies the way Zyrtec does. So, taking them the way I do work for me! ;)
