I am so upset. I went in this morning to have my pre-op urine for my surgery on Monday. My Dr. office just called and said they thought it may have been contaminated with yeast. She asked if I had any symptoms of a yeast infection. I don't. Now I have to go to the office to have a cath. Will they still do the surgery if I do have an infection. This is all so frustrating!!! I am just bawling!! I just want answers so I can feel better!!! Anyone been thru this??

I already took next week off work and if they postpone the surgery I am screwed!!

Hi there,

Unfortunately, if you have an infection they will not do the surgery. It is possible that, if you've got one, the bacteria or whatever organism is responsible could get into your bloodstream during the surgery, and you could become septic... which is extremely dangerous.

They will give you antibiotics or whatever you need and they will have to postpone, if you do have an infection.

I'm sorry... I know how frustrating it is to have stuff cancelled on you during the waiting-for-a-diagnosis period. I had a uro who cancelled 3 different things in a month with me... I ended up getting so upset and frustrated I had to switch uros!!

Hang in there... and remember, you may not have an infection after all!

I had a UTI 6 days prior to my cysto w/ hydro. My doc put me on a 5 day course of Levaquin and went ahead with the surgery.

Hopefully, if they do have to cancel yours you can be rescheduled quickly.

Well I am back!! They cathed me to get a clean culture. I don't have a bladder infection. She thought it might be the begining of a yeast infection and gave me diflucan. One question????? I have only been cathed one other time when I had that horrible potassium sensitivity test. Today It hurt sooooooooo bad when she put the cath in and when she took it out. Is it supposed to hurt that bad. It felt like a fire rod!!!! I have urinated several time since and each time it feels like my bladder is going to fall out???? My god I just want to know what is wrong!!!!!! This is really depressing!!!!!

Being cathed is a very funny thing... at least for me. Sometimes, I can deal with it just fine, and sometimes, like last week, it is excruciatingly painful. I think it has to do with how badly I'm flaring when I go to be cathed. Have you tried taking a Pyridium? Sometimes those can help ease the discomfort caused by catheterization.

I hope you feel better soon!!

When I have to be cathed, I concentrate on relaxing --- that helps me more than anything. Also, I've been cathed so many times I think one of these days I will start developing callus tissue there.

Sending gentle hugs,
Donna
