I just had my 2nd DMSO instillation. Both treatments were so excruciating that attempting to hold it for 30 minutes was completely unachievable. Is this typical?

My first few DMSO treatments were pretty awful, but then they helped for several years. At my request, they instilled lidocaine first, then the DMSO solution; that helped.

My first two DMSO cocktail instillations were very painful & my doctor only had me hold the solution 20 minutes. (I only lasted 8 minutes on the first one.) After that, they got easier & I got more IC symptom relief. The explanation I've heard is that the first few DMSO instillations, the cells "dump" their toxic contents & that after that, there isn't much left to release, so it gets easier as long as you have maintenance instillations.

That said, the rescue instillations of heparin, marcaine, sodium bicarbonate & water, help me a lot more & I learned to do them at home.

I hope you get good results & that you are feeling better soon,

I get dmso instills with hydro twice a yr. Had one Monday. they use lidocaine or marcaine after to help with pain

I did 6 home instills of dmso few yrs back. I would take pyridium and one vicodin an hour before I would do the instill and it helped me a lot. I did them on saturday so I had all day to rest on Sunday. No way I could have done dmso instill and worked the next day. Yes more instills I did at home of the six less painful it got for me

I know dmso controversial now but for me it has helped me so much - so much.
I tried other instills but too painful- also my uro was old school and did not use a recipe like you gals on here instill. that is why I am hoping he suggests we possibly try home instills of lido, marcaine, heparin and solu cortef
I am concerned my drug prescription coverage wont pay for the meds. I read someone posted here lidocaine not expensive. I bet heparin and solu cortef expensive? OH some use sodium bicarb that makes sense for sure

yes yes my friend > As Donna said ask for lidocaine to be used with dmso so it is less painful . I icant imagine dmso instills without lidocaine.
Can you take a pain pill before your go and/ or urerelle pyridium that helps me and of course have someone drive you if taking pain pill.
Hang in there I do think with these suggestions your dmso treatments could ease up for you. Like Kadi said and for me each one got little less painful . Just that one vicodin and pyridum an hour before helped tremendously. OH yes I remember I did give myself lidocaine instil and held that for 30 minutes then gave dmso instill on top of that

I just did 6 of them at home not sure why just 6 and no more at home now I get them under general anesthetic. Yes DMSO will stir things up a bit then settle down hope you get feeling better

we all have something different that works for all of us. good luck. vicky
