Hi -

Has anyone had luck with antibiotic/steroid suppositories for urethral burning/pain?

I am supposed to insert one three times a week for four weeks.

Do you have any tips for:

- insertion without awful pain/burning?
- melting it faster once inserted? It takes about 30 minutes and it is very painful to hold my finger in my urethral opening while making sure it melts.

Thank you very much.

I did urethral suppositories antibiotic/steroid for 4 months. While there is nothing you can do to make it less painfull. I take two pain pills 30 minutes before and just grit my teeth and bare it. It is horribly painful. It took generally 10 to 15 minutes for mine to melt. Then I would just lay in bed for awhile and read or watch a movie to get my mind off it. I think the suppositories helped me at but when I stopped doing them the pain started getting bad again but my doctor said that other woman got better. I just found out today that I have cystitis glandularis in my urethra only. Bladder and ureters fine. My doctor is putting me on a low dose 100 mg's of macrobid for 3 months to start and says that it may take longer but he is hoping it will get rid of the urethral polyps. :puppy:

Hi, Tracy -

Thanks for the info.

How did your doctor figure that you had the polyps? Is most of your trouble in the urethra?

Also, do you insert lidocaine in your urethra prior to inserting the suppository? If so, how?

Thanks a lot!

Hello CK1,

Yes, I did use lidocaine before using the suppositories. My doctor gave me some of those really long q-tip things they always have in their offices. You know they are in glass jars usually and they are individually wrapped. (two in each package) but they are sterile so that is why I used those instead of regular q-tips.

You doc could give you some for free or you could probably get them at medical supply store. I take no chances what so ever of getting infections so everything is always completely sterile.

It really hurts like hell these suppositories but I figured if they helped it was worth it. I do think they were helping me somewhat and I definately had some really good days but after 4 months it was just too painful to continue trying it that way. My doc swears that it has helped other women. I will tell you that the last couple times I had a PFD flare I did a urethral suppository and my PFD flare stopped. I have no idea why but it did. My doc is now treating me with long term antibiotic macrobid. Will let you know how it goes.

I think though I am a pretty rare case now with these polyps. I have "Cystitis Glandularis". My doc found the polyps when doing a cystoscopy in his office and there were tons of them. I am not talking just a couple. Anyway, the procedure was just to painful for me. He said he got everything he needed but I ended up having a cystoscopy under anesthesia and then they biopsed some of the polyps. I actually saw them on the tv screen during the first procedure and I have a picture of a couple of them from the second procedure.

My only problem is the urethra. But I do have pelvic floor dysfunction too but my doc thinks this is secondary to the cystitis glandularis. Like I am inadvertantly contracting my pelvic floor muscles because of the pain or expected pain (like when I know intercourse is going to happen or a painful procedure) of the inflamed polyps.

I looked this cystitis glandularis up on internet and it is a chronic reactive inflammatory disorder. I understand I will need to be monitored forever because it can be a precursor to adenocarcinoma. I think that is a bladder cancer. But this is a nonmalignant condition. That is what doc said. Sorry, I tend to ramble. I just want to help, get help, and for all of us to have our lives back. It is my biggest wish ever. Tracy :smile tee

CK1,

I know you don't post often anymore because you're getting better, but if you do get this message could you please tell me if the suppositories helped you. I have been reading your posts and I think we have a similar type of IC. Thanks in advance. I see a new urologist tommorow and I would like to try the suppositories.
