When I am in a really bad flare, the pain in my urethra is so bad, I am willing to do just about anything to make the pain stop. While I was on the toilet, the pain was just unbrearable. One day, in absolute frustration, I decided to just PUSH as hard as I could. After about 15 seconds of excrutiating pain....it just stopped. ALL OF THE PAIN. While I kept the muscles clenched, I was in no pain. I was like "finally!" So I just sat there, clenching, for about 5 minutes. When I finally let go, the pain still wasnt there. Then, all of a sudden, BAM! It all came back in an instant rush of pain.
Even though there is horrible pain while pushing and then the pain after, I find myself doing it every once in a while, cherishing those few minutes with no pain at all. Has anyone else ever heard of this, or know why it does this? I know it is probably bad for you.....

Hi, Bre. Tho I have not ever heard of that, I do have opinion. I think that even tho your straining is relieving the pain for a few seconds, I think that it is a bad thing. Is it making you hurt worse afterwards?? Even for a little bit? If so it is NOT the thing to do. Please mention this sensation to your doctor and see what he/she has to say about it. Good luck. Straining is never good for us --- it usually just makes the situation worse.

Hi Bre-
The majority of my pain is in my urethra too .... feels like I used a tampon soaked in bleach!
So, I know the relief you're talking about, I think. When the pain is too much for me to bear .. I sit on the toilet, and make the motion like I'm peeing, even though I don't have to. That somehow, makes the pain practically go away.
The second I stand up though --- the burning, pulsing pain comes right back.
This actually happened to me last week when I had the worst flare and literally couldn't stand the pain anymore. I sat on the toilet for a good 2 hours, reading magazines!
It was pretty embarassing trying to explain to my boyfriend, what exactly I was doing ....
During those flares where you can' t do anything but cry and squirm ... I understand your desperation!!
