It's a day filled with memories. When I was a child in the midwest, this was a day when my aunts and uncles and cousins would meet at a cemetery where many family members are at rest. There would be flags everywhere, a band, and the firing of a gun salute for our service men. After the ceremonies, everyone would mill around sharing memories before family got together at an aunt's nearby home for a huge picnic.

A few years ago, a cousin and I visited that same cemetery on memorial day and found that my family's graves all had flowers. A distant relative I had never met told me that they were looking after all our families. It was a very touching moment.

I encourage each of you to spend at least a few minutes today being thankful to those who have gone before, especially those who died in battle to preserve our freedom, from the revolutionary war to the present day.
