I was seriously thinking about giving up Elmiron after 10 months because I didn't feel Elmiron was helping much. But after talking to my doc, I went up to 500mg/day then sometimes 600mg/day and wow does it make a difference! I actually feel much better and my frequency is way down. I still have to stick to the diet, though. And I'm still doing PTNS as well as taking Elavil and Hydroxyzine.
So here's what happened... a couple of months ago I went up to 500 mg/day and noticed within one day that I felt better. I thought for sure it couldn't be the Elmiron since it takes so long to work, like months. But I had already been on 400mg/day for several months. I thought it was a fluke, but I kept at 500mg/day. Eventually for some reason that I can't remember I just went back to my usual 400mg/day dose. So a few weeks ago I tried going up again and Voila - felt better within a day again. I can go up to 600mg so I tried that and have been feeling pretty great. Frequency is my worst problem and I actually went out with friends last night, then went to a movie and didn't go the whole time until I got home! AMAZING! So anyway, I periodically have my liver enzymes checked and so far so good. But if you don't have severe side effects from Elmiron and you're not seeing big improvement with it after several months, maybe you should talk to your doc to see if a higher dose would be an option for you. It is making all the difference for me. I'm still not "normal", but it makes life much easier.
I'll keep you all updated!
