History
-------
I went to the ER first week of February thinking I had food poisoning. Turns out I had a severe UTI and they sent me home with a 5 day course of Bactrim. Felt a bit better, but within 24 hours started to feel bad again. Went to an urgent care, still had infection so they gave me 7 days of Cipro. Still was feeling UTI symptoms off and on after finishing the antibiotics. Followed up with my PCP who did another urinalysis which came back negative.

I was still complaining about discomfort down around my urethra, kind of like it was overextended or pushing out, almost like a valve was stuck open. So she sent me to a urologist who said I needed a kidney ultrasound and cystoscopy.

Let me tell you - the in office cystoscope was the worst thing I'd ever felt. The doctor told me 6-8 hours of discomfort. Try 2-3 days. Ultrasound came back fine. Cytoscope - some minor irritation in bladder, but urologist says it's 2 out 10 scale, not as bad as he thought it would be and it's just post infection inflammation and will go away. I don't believe him, especially after having symptoms for 2 1/2 months.

Where I am now
----------------
To cut a very long story short, the reason why I'm posting here is I'm trying to figure out if it could be PN or Urethral Syndrome instead of IC.

These are my main issues:

o I have no discomfort when I first wake up
o By 10-11AM, I start to feel the first pings of discomfort after sitting on the couch or the rocking chair
o The discomfort is feeling like I have to pee all the time and that there's this pressure around my urethra and top inside of my vagina. It almost feels like everything is swollen - I can't concentrate, all I can focus on is this discomfort
o I will get up and pee like 3x in an hour; by the 3rd time, I have the burning at the end of peeing - ugh
o If I lay down or sit up, the discomfort subsides, but doesn't go away completely
o the only relief I get is from pyridium and somewhat from urelle; Diposed did nothing, oxybutnin seems to do nothing
o the heating pad is my best friend - when it gets really bad, the heating pad on my lower back and tailbone or on my pubic bone really helps

To make matters worse, it's brought back my panic attacks. I've been panic free for about a year now, but now they are back worse than ever.

I am seeing my PCP on Friday to F/U from the cystoscopy. I'm thinking that I might want her to refer me to a neurologist so they can do an MRI and see if there are any nerve issues going on. Does this make sense?

I have no idea what I've got. But I'm tired of crying all the time and I can't even leave the house. I become panicky just thinking about having to go to the grocery store.

Anyone have any insight that they can share with me? I feel like I'm losing my mind.

If you don't feel better soon, I suggest you go back to the urologist. Making an interstitial cystitis diagnosis involves ruling out other problems first. There are many different treatments for bladder irritation --- hopefully it isn't IC and will go away with conservative treatment.

I'm really sorry you feel that bad. If it gets too bad, contact your urologist and ask them if there is anything they can do for you in the meantime waiting for results. I hope you get better, and that its not IC...its not easy to live with. Let us know how your results turn out.

I had such a bad experience with the urologist that I won't be going back to him - I'm doing my F/U with my PCP. He was apathetic, his nurse left for a doctor's appt leaving him stranded with no help to do the procedure. They finally pulled in an office lady to assist and then he proceeded to put silver nitrate in my bladder until I started crying and said it hurt and then he removed it. All and all, it was horrific.

That's not to say that I shouldn't follow up with another urologist. I just don't know what they can tell me at this point. I have no clinical symptoms that they can see other than some mild irritation in the bladder.

Are there any other tests that a urologist can do?

I just don't know what other diagnostic procedures or specialist I need to see to get to the bottom of this.
