I did this project for my photography class project. We had to make a book and send it to blurb.com so they could print them for us.

Here's my artist statement from my book so you'll get the background info:

In this country, it seems we are obsessed with time and convenience. I believe we are really concerned with these two things when it pertains to the food we consume. Our grocery stores are stocked with frozen prepackaged dinners and foods in tin cans. Some of us never even think to flip the product around and read the long list of ingredients, some of which are completely foreign to us. Many of us are willing to sacrifice a healthy diet for a quick, prepackaged, preservative-filled meal.

As a vegetarian, a self proclaimed foodie, and a person who suffers from food allergies, I have taken a different route. I believe that our society has lost the desire to understand exactly what they are putting into their bodies. Understanding food, and creating meals with your own two hands is a gratifying process. I set out to prove that with this book. I wanted to take prepackaged versions of food and put my own spin on it. I wanted to create the same type of meal using whole ingredients. I wanted to list the ingredients for both meals to contrast the drastic difference between the two. The end results are quite surprising.

I enjoyed doing this book because I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of food. I am inspired by the flavors, smells, textures, and colors. I wanted to get the detail of the food I was photographing. I tried to portray vibrant colors and varying textures in the photographs I took. I kept the prepackaged versions on simple background and tried to not decorate the frame with anything else. I wanted the food, the plastic, and the cardboard to be the focus of these photographs. For the recreation meal, I wanted to give it more of a personal feel. I wanted to include bright colors and plating that would make it feel more like a home-cooked meal.

So we all know as ICers what it's like to live without prepackaged foods and we truly know how much crap is put into them! But I can't lie! I did have to include one or two meals that aren't IC friendly because I needed to have a lot of variety in my book and they don't make frozen nomato pasta sauce dinners. ;)

And sorry to anyone I make hungry for a grapefruit when you get to the artist statement page. :biglaugh:

Anyways, I wish I could show you the real thing in person because the online preview kinda sucks but check it out!

What a lovely book! Your photography is beautiful. I couldn't enlarge it enough to read the text, but I think you included the ingredients on each page???? Wow....congratulations.
