This was thee most crazy insain day I have had in such a long time I can't remember when. I wanted to share this because I thought that this was absolutly crazy to do this kind of a thing to someone and not put them to sleep. And I was wondering if anyone else had gone through this kind of a distention without being put under a General, or if I am just very sensitive to them. Because they seemed to think that I was in their office. I was told that I was just going into the office for a consult, but when I got there and started telling the Dr. about my symptoms, he wanted to go up inside me and take a look, (a pelvic exam) I about flew off of the table with pain. And so he said let go over into the other room, I would like to check out your Bladder We will fill it up with some liquid and distend it and take a look. (Keep in mind here I knew nothing about any of this ever, did not know of IC period.) He said we could do it in the hospital but it would be faster this way, and I will find out right now what is wrong with you. So I said sure! Go right ahead! He never once told me that it was going to be painful or could be painful and that I might want to consider maybe having it done in the hospital.Well That was the Biggest mistake of my life. And I would never do that again. He did not put me under. He filled my Bladder up with 800cc's of liquid, and during this the pain was so intence, that after crying out in pain, I finally could not speak, I almost blacked out from the pain, And then they released the liquid. That is how they found out that my walls were Bleeding and I had IC. I thought I was going into the Dr. office to rule out a Bladder infection, I had know clue what was about to come my way! I just had my sigmoid colon removed 4 months ago, and thought this pain was from scar tissue attatched to the Bladder. Some of you already know that this same Dr. wanted to do the distention to me again, in the hospital this time. I have refused, I will never have another one of those done again unless it is an Emergency. I have never recovered from that first one and it has been 2 months. My 5th DMSO treatments have not worked for me either. But I am not giving up hope here. I am still going to continue on my Elmiron, and my BladderQ pills came the other day, so I have started on those twice a day. And I am really banking on them to give me relief. I really have high hopes. Wish me luck

Thanks, I was Just sharing cause the more I think about it the more I'm thinking about changing Dr's here, he seems real bent on these distention cause the DMSO does not seem to be doing the trick for me like it does for sooooooo many others out there, and I just can't have that constant conflict going on with him, I need to be able to talk to him, but he makes me feel uncomfortable, he was not my choice, he was another Dr's choice. What do you think??
My goodness I cannot imagine going through that without being completely out. I feel for you, I know it must have been so painful and a traumatic experience. Hope that you will start to feeling a little better. Please keep us posted as to how you are doing, hugs Iris.:grouphug: :flower:

I also had the same thing done to me in 1995....after I got home called the doctor crying in pain and he told me my 'discomfort' was normal and to keep taking the Tylenol that was not working to begin with!!! Tpok me a few more visits before I got up the nerve to change docs.....Please don't waste any time....if you are uncomfortable with anything that happened ask your primary care for another referral.
I am going in to the hospital Monday for revision surgery on my interstim implant site. While I'm under ( thank goodness), my wonderful, trusted uro will do a hydrodistention.
Not looking forward to it....and especially to the time after it....I was extremely sore and burning for nearly a week last time...Say a little prayer for me, would ya'

I sometimes wonder if they can do this to us humans? what can they do to animals?
In 1997 I also went in and had this barberic procedure done with no anethsia or pain killers and it hurt so bad. I then found out that the GYNO that had done it keeps this procedure in the GYNO part and was charging the Insurance all kinds of money cuz she said that she treated some one with chronic UTI this way and the Insurance co notified me that she should have put me to sleep is that sad or what? she billed it like she had but did not. I rec all the copies and right there in black and white it said anesthia and all kinds of supposely pain killers I never got. The medical community is awfull.

:shake: Ruth,
That is just awhful something should be done to stop this kind of treatment. I know if that had happend to me I would be terrified to ever step foot in a doctors office again. I can only imagine how many people are treated like this and never go back to another doctor out of fear. I can only pray no other people have to go through such a thing:pray:  ,

I just read your story and am sitting here in tears for you and what you went through. I'm supposed to have this procedure done in 16 days, but in a hospital. I also went in to a Urologist the other day, not knowing anything about IC, nor was it explained to me, although he was very nice in every other way. These doctors all seem to lack feeling enough need to give information to the patient, and they all want to pump us full of meds. Most of the time, we don't know what these meds are doing to us, or what the side effects will be, or if they can actually cause more harm than good.
Just know that I'll be thinking of you and hoping that somehow your pain and suffering have lessened. If I end up being diagnozed as having IC, it's going to change my life. I've not felt right now for some time, and we've checked so much out (all of which has turned up negatively, except for acid reflux, which seems to be under control).
I had this done in the mid 70's, in the hospital but was not put under. I will never have it done again without more anesthesia. It is very painful without it.
I am sorry you went through that and hope you find a Dr. you are comfortable with if you choose to change.

Sorry you were put through such pain--:(
Sounds pretty barbaric to me-- I knew they did cystos as an office procedure, but I thought cysto/hydros were always done in a hospital setting with anesthesia--
Anyway, I hope you've recovered some and are feeling better by now.
Hugs & blessings to you--:cat:

I appreciate all of your replies back to me, I'm sorry some of you had the same thing happen to you as I did. To those of you having things done to you coming up on the 16th, good luck to you. And I hope that for the rest of the weekend here everyone has a comfortable night.

What the guy did was in an in office cysto...(I know...duh) My original uro did that tome as well but only filled me to 200 cc's and I was screaming and squirming. He said that was all he needed to do, and released the water. He then scheduled me for a hospital procedure. SAme thing, only I was under anastetia. He could fill me to 550cc's then did a biopsy. He found from all that that my mast cell count is very high and bladder wall somewhat red and irritated. He then sent me to his partener, who is an IC specialist. She is marvelous, BTW. Anyway, if you have the procedure under anastetia, it doesn't hurt...(at least while they are doing it) But it is painful when you wake up. You can get some pain killer...should the uro be a nice person and believe in them,,,,I've had a hell of time getting pain relief from uro's but my GP has been awesome.
I hope you find some help and a doc who will tell you what the heck they are doing. You do have a right to ask, even though you shouldn't have to . Most docs tell you exactly what they are doing and why. Keep in mind, some people (donna, for one) have found relief from the cysto's under anastetia, and they go in periodically to have it done. I didn't dig it, myself, but appreciated the info. It finally dx'd me and for that, I was appreciative.
Good luck
Tracey

I notice you live in southern oregon.....? I live in vancouver, my Uro is in Beaverton, at St.Vincent. If you have trouble with any uro's in your area, you can PM me and I'll give you her name. Believe me, she's worth the day trip. (make a two day trip of it and enjoy the sights) she rated in the top 5 uros in the portland area...( and there are like way over 200 of them...)
Bye, bye...good luck. let us know how it is going.
