Hello! My name is Karen Highsmith and I live in Montgomery, IL. I was medically diagnosed some 14 years ago with the horrible & debilitating disease of "Interstitial Cystitis."
I.C. is an extremely painful disease of the urinary bladder. My Urologist tried many clinical treatments; sadly to say, with little or no help. (1) 8 Rimso Bladder Instillments; (2) Oxybutin; (3) Pyridium; (4) Elavil; (5) Vistrial; (6) Elmiron (which unfortunately I could not tolerate because of the nausea); and also (7) Prelief.
It was also necessary for me to constantly watch my diet very closely because many foods & beverages would greatly trigger my severe pain with all urgency & frequency.
For so many years I cried a lot .... Never have I felt so miserable & hopeless in my entire life! Not only did I have the severe pain that is associated with I.C., but basically, I could no longer enjoy the food I loved; such as Fruits & Salads or any acid-forming foods whatsoever; including coffee...and the list kept going on & on.
I was extremely depressed and there was no way out of MY DILEMMA. However, I did thank God for my dear husband, family & friends which were all very supportive and this did help some of the time.
Then about a 1 1/2 years ago, I was introduced to a WONDERFUL PRODUCT called, "Tamer Products," which neutralizes the acid in food for people suffering with I.C. Tamer has just launched a company called pH Sciences and they have recently started selling a product called pH Control, which reduces the acid in urine to help people with I.C.
So I decided to really put it to the TEST! But to my ultimate surprise, it REALLY WORKED for me! My bladder pain, urgency & frequency dramatically improved 70-80% with the daily use of this Product.
I am now able to eat my much desired fruits again. I drink coffee and even have those "Forbidden Acid-Forming Foods" like spaghetti, pizza, etc. (of course, in moderation) with little or NO PROBLEM!
My life has truly changed since pH Control and TAMER, and now I would love to SHARE my "Thankful Testimony" with my other fellow sufferers of I.C.
With all my heart, I can sincerely say that these products have transformed my life and that no other product that I have tried has even came close to the EFFECTIVENESS of the pH Sciences products in relieving my many years of suffering.
I truly believe, you too, will receive the wonderful results as I have.
God Bless You!
Sincerely,
Karen Highsmith

Isn't this like prelief? Or something with different ingredients?

It is superior to prelief in my case.

Tamer products are very similar to Prelief. Neither has medicinal value. What they do is to reduce the acid in foods if taken with the foods or added to foods before eating.
I have tried both and find Prelief easier to use. I like the granules for coffee --- Tamer granules refused to dissolve and I ended up flaring.
Remember --- neither product does anything other than reduce the acid content of foods ingested with it. And it's important, with either product, to either take it immediately before eating or drinking or mix it with the food or drink.

It was easy enough to find the website. The kit is free. I just ordered one. I have a GERD (acid reflux), so it might be something I can use anyway, even if it doesn't help the "mystery" burning that I'm having. Thanks, Karen
never mind, I'm going to ask this in a different post since it's going off topic.

Hi Donna.
What Granules are you referring to? Could it be COFFEE? Is it like COFFEE? Haven't had a cup of coffee in forever...didn't think I could ever go there again. Please let me know, if you can. Thanks. Tilly

The granules I mentioned are a form of Prelief --- Tamer also comes in granular form. I find Prelief does dissolve; Tamer does not.
With Prelief, I have a cup of coffee every morning with no problem.

Thanks Donna,
I got Prelief, but still gun shy of the diet No No's. Soon as I feel brave enough, I will try prelief so I can have that long awaited, craved cup of coffee. Very disciplined on my diet...to avoid another flare. Thanks again Donna for helpful suggestion and reply.

I am replying for my Mother at this time she did not sanction this reply but she did tell me that Prelief does not work as well for her as Tamer Hence the first posting on this message board.
She was so overjoyed that she found something that worked for her. And wanted to pass this on to other people with ICN.
I just do not appreciate someone saying that one product is better than another since it is the individule that uses the product and it's results on that particular individule and not the product.
For some Prelief may work.
For other cases such as my mothers. A (very Extreme Case)Tamer has been her Godsend.
My Mother is in the best frame of mind and body since trying this product, Something I have not seen in years. There is nothing like calling my mother and hearing a voice that is not littered with tearful sobs.
I for one cannot begin to imagine the pain you all go thru, However I have lived it thru my mother who is very dear to me. And I know for a fact that Tamer products worked for her.
Sincerly James Highsmith

Hi,
Prelif did not work for me. I would like to know what this Tamer is and how do I get it?
Thanks for putting your post.

Tamer is available in many grocery stores --- it's usually with the coffee.

Have any of you ever tried alfalfa or spoken to anybody else that has tried it? It sounds like it works the same as prelief or tamer, except it is in pill form. My health care provider recommended it, explaining that it simply reduces the acidity of the urine, thereby preventing the pain. I've been using it successfully for a few years now. I don't use any other medication. I just take 4 - 5 alfalfa pills if I'm going to have coffee or something else that may irritate my bladder.
I told one of my friends (who also has IC) about the alfalfa, and she gave it a try. She found it so helpful, she has not taken Elmiron or had a DMSO treatment since. It's been about two years now.
The alfalfa costs about $7 per bottle of 100 pills, so it is also very inexpensive! :) I get it at a local health food store or on the internet.
I'd be very interested to hear from anybody else who has tried this option for pain prevention.

When I'm not in a flare, the Prelief tablets work very well for me. I usually take 3 tablets with a cup of coffee. During a flare (or even within a week of a flare), it doesn't help at all. I didn't like the taste that the Prelief granules made, and for some reason they didn't work for me. I guess we are all somewhat different.
I also have GERD. I'm ok there as long as I take my Aciphex.
I'm pretty leary of trying any new product. Has anyone else tried this Tamer stuff?
Briana, I'm surprised to hear about the alfalfa. Seems like being plant based that it might have oxolic acid...had anyone else tried it? Although I have to say I use echinacea from time to time and it doesn't seem to bother my IC....

Just my $.002....I'd rather use a product that is kind enough to donate money to help us IC patients have a wonderful site like this...
I'd say, try Prelief first. If it doesn't work for you, even after taking many many pills (sometimes for really acidic foods or for certain people, more pills work better than fewer), then okay look at the other products out there.
Maybe I'm weird, but I feel like I owe Prelief a little bit for helping this site to be here.

Prelief never did anything for me. Elmiron worked the best for me, but since it is so expensive, I decided to try Quercetin and Glucosamine with Chondroitin and MSM in late November. These anti-inflammatory supplements have worked better than anything else I've tried, and I've been off Elmiron for 2 1/2 months so far. I'm spending about $30 each month now instead of $194.

Hi Rita,
I ran across this information:
Tamer Products has a division called PH Sciences which handles all of their acid controlling products. They have a website with an online store. I don't know how to paste it onto this message so I'll just write it out for you.
www.phsciences.com/shop/
I've never tried any of their products and I don't know much about them. Of course each of us is different and what works for one may not for another.
Hope this helps.
Carolyn
