Just curious as to whether anyone has experienced a worsening of IC after hysterectomy?
I have fibroids and have had a few Docs bring up having my uterus removed but keeping my falopian tubes.
I would love to stop having my period as they are very painful, but wonder if it would exaserbate my IC......

its up to you what you decide to do but I learned that surgery for me, will be absolute last resort!
I had Hydrothermal Ablation done in 2005 & I knew 3 days after it that it was the wrong choice for me, most of my issues worsened after that.
Read Screaming to be heard by Dr. Elizabeth Vliet, it should help you with your choices:0
Finding a good doctor is a big challenge too, I speak from experience!
PM me with your e-mail addy & I'll send you my Word document full of books & websites to check into!

Oh, I am wondering the same thing. I have endometriosis and it and my bladder are terrible every month. I can't take hormones or bcp's since my mom has had breast cancer. It is hard to know what would be worse. I know having the laser surgery for endo made for VERY miserable times with the bladder afterwards. I don't want it again!!! I would rather be in bed in pain for a week every month than do that. But if a hysterectomy would solve it....well then...it might be worth it.

Shamay- first it is up to you! For me this is how i think i got ic is from a hysterectomy. I really had two done. The first one was done in april 2008 they took out my uterus and half my crevix. Than only three months later i was still having major issues so in july 2008 they took out the rest of my cervix and my right tube and ovary (because it was covered in cysts) when they took out the other half of my cervix they really messed arouind with my bladder.( big time) when i woke up after this surgery i knew something was way wrong!!!!!!!!!! This obgyn told me he found know endometriosis. Later in oct 2008 with a another doctor they found endo growing all over my colon and under my bladder they can't remove it on my colon because it will kill me. There is too much of it and it is too deep into my colon. They want to remove my last tube and ovary to see if that will kill it. I am just too scared to have yet another surgery. In 2008 i had 7 surgery and many tests. So my advice only have the hysterectomy if you really have too. I wish you best mindee

I too, began with IC big and bad after laser surgery for endometriosis. Any other surgery really scares me as well.

me three. I read on a different IC board that many of the women had their IC pain decrease after a hysterectomy. I would only choose it if it would really do that and with a dr I felt safe enough with. but if it really did decrease it, I might especially since I have heavy bleeding and MAJOR cramps. /sigh:confused: I 'd like to know too so please share if you find something...

Hi Shamay ~ I had fibroids with hemrrorhging severely (they wanted to do a blood transfusion but I refused at the time) and had my hysterectomy scheduled but the meds my doctor gave me kicked in and the bleeding stopped. I made it about another 6 years, feeling so happy that I kept my insides in tact, when I needed bladder suspension surgery and the doctor talked me into a hysterectomy with it.....I know my IC symptoms began during my recovery from that surgery. I think the bladder really takes a beating during these surgeries. Just my opinion and please remember that everyone is so different responding to treatment that you will make the decision that's right for you.
Prayers as you research what's best for you

I have never had one, but my Aunt got a hysterectomy. I know she suffers quite a bit now. Only because she has to take hormones and what not. And then the pain she experiences :/ I think you should only have one as a last resort. As for the period pains birth control can actually help that. Thats the main reason I started taking birth control. My cramps were so bad I would normally have to be taken to the hospital. But after I got on birth control they weren't that bad at all.
As for the fibroids I don't know :/ You should ask them if there is anything else at all that you can do. A hysterectomy is just so serious D:

Thank you to everyone for responding, I really appreciate it! :)
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, life has been a bit hecktic for the last long while.
I think it's a good idea to use it as a last resort, as you all have said. My IC is really bad at times but wouldn't want to risk making it worse and permanently so.
I will keep on trying other ways to manage my fibroids before going any drastic routes.
Thank you so much. I am so happy and grateful to have a place to talk to other women and get some great insite!
:)
