Question: Has anyone else out there ever had their bladder rupture during cysto with distention? After my last cysto, the doctor told me mine had ruptured. I had to have a catheter for 4 days, and the pain was pretty horrendous. I'm just wondering also what kind of damage it did to my bladder--scar tissue perhaps?

Unfortunately, it IS possible for the bladder to rupture during a cysto/hydro. There is a small chance of that happening for everyone... and it's more likely if your bladder is very small and inflamed, etc. I'm so sorry you were one of the unlucky few that had this happen!!! :( I hope you're feeling better now!!

As for lasting damage, I don't know... perhaps you can discuss it with your doc??

Yes, talk with your doctor about this. Hopefully it did not cause permanent damage.

Thanks to all of you for your support, encouragement, and advice! I will talk to my doc about it. Also, when I get the chance I'll do a search online to see if there's any info out there. It happened back ini '93, so I'm hoping by now most of the damage is gone.

So sorry this happened to you. :( Hope your bladder healed with no permanent damage. I have never heard of a bladder rupture before. If I had known this could happen I would have been worried too.

It's possible for the bladder to rupture during a hydrodistention, but is extremely rare. It's one of those things most doctors will tell their patients prior to having the procedure done. I'm sure that by now it has completely healed.

I have had 35 hydrodistentions and will probably have number 36 some time this spring or summer and have never had a problem with them. I know there is always a tiny risk, but the potential for benefit for me far outweighs the remote possibility I might have a problem.

Actually, I think there's more danger to me from the traffic on the way to and from the hospital!

Sending encouraging hugs,
Donna

My very first cysto with hydro ended with me going to the ER 3 nites in a row before they finally took an Xray and saw that I had a hold blown thru my bladder. (When they did the biopsy, the bladder wall was sooooo thin it tore). THe ER admitted they never looked for a reason for my pain -- rather they admitted to just medicated me and sending me home...good grief

I ended up in the hospital for a week, 2 weeks or so with a catheter....I still don't like doing Cystos with Hydros and I praticularly found no relief with them -- but I continue to get one every now and then to keep the bladder muscle nice and stretched out and keep my capacity as big as possible.

I suppose scar tissue is possible....depending on all sorts of variable...big tear, small tear? any infection settled in? yeast? other complications? I healed up pretty quick (Quick I mean a month by the time catheter came out) Urgency andFrequency still were huge problems.....Would I contine with C&H's???? Yes. :)

Thanks for your input, everybody! :D
Yvette,
Do you know how your bladder looked the next time you had a cysto after they found the hole? I haven't had another cysto since then. I was scheduled to have one last summer, but I guess it wasn't meant to be, because it kept getting postponed, then we moved, etc.

I had no scar tissue to speak of...I also know I do NOT have Hunner's Ulcers but I do have the minute tiny little tears in the bladder wall...I'm sondering if that might make a difference. I also know that keeping a foley cath in while the rupture healed made all the difference in the world....my bladder could focus on just healing instead of doing double duty of filling & emptying while trying to heal.

I also went on an extreme and severe diet around that time so perhaps that helped in the integreity of the muscle and tissue today (???)

Thanks again, Yvette! It's comforting to me to hear that you didn't have any scar tissue. I, too, had the pinpoint hemorrhages in my bladder. I had a catheter in for 4 days after the rupture--not as long as you did, but still, I think it helped.

20 years ago I had a cysto with hyrodistention. They were trying to find out why I had frequency and urgency (no pain at that time). I woke up in more pain than before I had it done. I went home and started bleeding. I called the doctor and he said I was just getting my period. I was old enough to know the difference between menstrating and blood from an injury. When the pain became unbearable I called him again. He told me he was going on vacation so make an appt for 2 weeks from then. I tried to sleep that night and woke in the middle of the night hemorrhaging and in the worse pain I ever felt in my life. I went to the ER and spent the next 10 days in the hospital with a 3 way catheder. When they took the catheder out I had to pass a clot (won't go into details on that one).

When I was released from the hospital the doctor told me he either puncured a hole in my bladder during the cysto or I have Interstitial Cystitis.

I do not tell this story often because I do not want to scare people. I have never had a cysto since and never will. My biopsy was done in my doctor's office with me wide awake.

Ginny, I don't blame you for not wanting to ever have a cysto again! But without anesthesia, wasn't your biopsy painful?

Sing_to_You, I had severe pain from my bladder for years after the rupture. But around last fall, my IC finally went into remission. I think it was due to several medications and a major reduction in stress when I quit my teaching job. I had a flare recently, but now my bladder is doing pretty well. I have some urgency and frequency at times, but hardly any pain. Now, if I can just get my fibromyalgia to calm down...

I had two cystos before the rupture that went fine. I think the rupture was mostly the doctor's incompetence. I might have one again if I really trusted the uro and thought it would help. But I must say it amazes me that some ICers have a cysto every few months. Even the cystos that went fine for me increased my pain for a few weeks, so I dread them. It's interesting how we're all so different, isn't it? :)

I know the feeling when I had my cyst/hydro done almost a couple of years ago, my bladder tore, and I had to have an indwelling catheter for a week. It is not a time period I would like to live again, and am happy to say I have another urologist who is great. It was quite an experience. Iris.:yikes: :flower:

The biopsy was uncomfortable but not painful. He did not distend it much because I could have hemorrhaged again. Most people will say that this might not be considered a biopsy but I really don't care. Even without distention the report came back positive for IC.
I took a tranquillizer before going to the office. For me, the stress of these procedures are the worst part.
