I am due to have a full Hysterectomy plus a rectocele repair next month. I am over 60 so I think having the hysterectomy can only give my bladder more room. The rectocele seems to be the problem I have been having with great pressure and pain that has removed my quality of life. My biggest fear: Is my bladder going to go totally crazy! Cause me more pain then I can stand? Will I be able to void or shut down completely. I'm very afraid. Without IC I think I could make it OK but putting the IC into the mix sounds like he** to me. Any suggestions , opinions or information from anyone else who have had this operation would help my greatly. In my many years of life I have not had anything more upsetting except the death of my Mother. I guess I'm afraid of the unknown more then anything else. The Doctor, whom I trust, has said he is unsure how my bladder will react to all this. Thank you in advance for any information you can give me. Hugs, Ziggy

Dear Ziggy: Nothing at all against your doctor (is he/she a gyno, a uro?) but IMO this is a situation that calls for a second and maybe even a third opinion if only to help put your mind at rest. Take your time before making such a big decision, especially since even the dr. acknowledges the outcome is unsure.

I had my hysterectomy before IC, but I have had an abdominal surgery for removal of adhesions, rectocele repair, and a sling. None made my IC any worse. In fact getting rid of the adhesions allowed me to stand straight without pain for the first time in months and getting rid of the rectocele made my life easier --- no effect on my bladder.

I don't blame you for being nervous about having surgery. Be sure to let everyone know that you have interstitial cystitis from the doctor to anesthesiologist, and nurses caring for you.

I had cervical spine surgery four weeks ago and I totally understand being nervous beforehand - how about "terrified" :) --- but the surgery went well and three days later I came home.

Warm hugs,
Donna

I would be concerned too. You will probably have a Foley Catheter in when you wake up so your bladder won't hold much urine.Personally I would risk it if you trust your Dr.
I had the hysterectomy, cystocele and rectocele all done at one time in 1975.
I was 33 at the time. I had never had pelvic pain, just lots of pressure. I had a hard time trying to pee the first time they took the catheter out. They game me anti-spasmodic medicines and it eventually worked out ok.The only thing I noticed after that was if I drank alcohol, beer or wine,I would have a lot of Urethral hesitation.

In 1992 I had my first ever UTI.Never another urinery problem until 2006. At that time I was diagnosed OAB even though none of the meds helped my frequency or pressure.I was diagnosed with IC in May 2008.I do have mild cyctocele and rectocele but not enough to bother with. In 1975 my condition was urgent,My uterus had fallen into the vagina and the pressure was very bad.
