Do people have success in treating their IC with Codeine? I am a male with IC, on average probably have to urinate 8-10 times a night. Recently though I got a bad cold and was prescribed cough medicine with codeine in it. By the third night I had only gotten up twice and was actually able to relax in the morning in my bed with virtually no feeling of urgency. What a great feeling, unfortunately cough medicine is gone and I am back to square one with my IC, Wondering if I should see Dr and see if he can prescribe Codeine for me?

I cannot take codeine as it causes urinary retention. maybe that's why you had such good results?

Evail gave me urinary retention as well.

I do not understand, and, if ANYONE can explain why medications I used to take on a daily basis, Percocet, Prozac, Topomax, Neurontin, suddenly cause me to be in retention, I would be so very grateful....

I have great success taking tylenol with codeine but it tends to make me a little hyper and keeps me up at night even with my Ambien and it can be constipating. Ask your doctor for tylox capsules, they are a lifesaver.

For me- codeine is a life saver. I don't get any side effects from it. In fact it sometimes helps when i'm in retention because it helps relax me by easing the pressure pain so i can actually go to the toilet more easily. If i take 2 tylenol#3 pills as soon as i feel a flare coming on it really helps with the pain and discomfort. Unfortuately they don't do much for me if i am already in the middle of a flare. Also, most doctors are happy to prescrible Tylenol with codeine without too much hastle- so it's definately worth trying :)

That is good! But I had to switch because of the tylenol because I'm taking elmiron and it increases your liver enzymes so I didn't want to mess up my liver anymore! I'm still looking for some relief!

Elaine64,
Read up on those medications, they may have dyes or preservatives in them that now hurt your wounded bladder.I had to change around many of my meds for that reason. Even chewing gum can have ingredients that affect the bladder. Jo

Codeine is a successful pain killer for some people. I personally can't take it, however.

Bpenn9 - I know that many patients get extreme relief from codiene or Tylenol 3, etc. The only other thing I'm thinking is I've actually been prescribed the same cough medicine you are talking about and aside from the codiene the cough syrup itself is like nyquil - completely knocks me out. It may be helping with the pain as well as just making you very tired. I'm not sure if you're on any antihistimines, but I have a lot of trouble falling asleep and wake up a lot through the night having to urinate. I cannot tolerate hydroxizine, but take 2 benadryl before bed and it knocks me out! If I get up in the middle of the night to pee I feel like a complete drunk, but don't get up as much and sleep much more soundly. just something to think about.
