I had a pelvic ultrasound done yest. and was told that I had to drink 32 oz of water starting at 1pm and finishing it by 1:30pm and then hold it for an hour. My appt. was at 2:30pm. Boy, it was tough the last 20 min or so, but I did it!!:woohoo: I pray that the results of this will give me some answers as to what is going on w/my body.

I could not drink that amount and hold it that long, way to go, it does sound like a lot of water in a very short period of time, I think sometimes they get us to drink more than we need too because they don't want us showing up with our bladders not full enough to the procedure.

Thank you Mothergoose!
I was pretty proud of myself! :)
I had this test done b/c I got a 2nd opinion and my Urogyn does not think I have IC, but he is ruling out other things first.
Are most people w/IC unable to do this test or are there some of us who can do it?

I think a lot of people with IC at some point in time end up having this test. In my case I have had it done so often for ovarian cyst and urinary retention that I now know just to drink half of what they say to drink, on the advice of the lady who does my ultrasounds.
I think and I don't know for sure but you can have a trans vaginal ultrasound where they insert a probe into your vagina, and I believe then they don't need your bladder full to do this type of ultrasound.
Also not all people with IC can't hold their urine, everyone symptoms etc seem to be a little different.

Hi.
Sometimes they do both the pelvic ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound at the same time. After they do the pelvic ultrasound you empty your bladder and then they do the transvaginal. I can't imagine doing that one with a full bladder. UGH!

They actually did have me do the vaginal probe too, but luckily then let me empty my bladder before they did that otherwise they said the test would be inaccurate if I had too much water in my bladder, but before this they said my bladder was waaaay full and I was uncomfortable so they told me I could go, but to count for 3 seconds and then stop. Now, that was really hard to do!
When they allowed me to completely empty my bladder I did not feel like I got complete relief so the tech checked to be sure I was empty and I was not. She said there wasn't too much left in there, but enough to make the vaginal probe test inaccurate so she told me to try to go again. I was able to go again and then she said I was fine.
She said that sometimes when the bladder is too full and people urinate they may "feel" like they fully emptied, but they really haven't. Do you know why this may be? I'm afraid I'm retaining. I figured after drinking all that water and then holding it for so long I would have exploded when I finally was able to go. Weird.

I had that test too and was able to hold it. It was very uncomfortable but I got through it. They didn't find anything unusual, even though most days I was retaining urine after peeing. I do have IC but wasn't diagnosed at that time.

The test that you had done was probably one of the worst tests Ive ever had done. I was so bloated that I had to go home and change clothes! Then, I had to hurry because I had a 40 minute drive to work. I went before I left, stopped half way to go again, then barely made it to the gas station near my work to go again. I think I went every 15 minutes for 3 hours!
Im so glad your test went so well! I hope that they didnt find anything!

You went every 15 min for 3 hours! Wow! That must have been awful, but the tech told me I would most likely keep peeing for awhile after the procedure. Thank you all for your positive posts!!:)

To respond to your question, I am able to hold water all day if I have to. Of course, I ignore some urgency signals that I know are false due to IC. On most days I only pee 3 times a day. Of course in a flare I skyrocket up to 20ish times a day...I feel for anyone who has frequency all the time. My urgency is bad enough, don't know what I would do with both :(

I have IC. I had both a pelvic and a vaginal ultrasound in the process of finding the right diagnosis. Well, I should say that they tried to do the pelvic but it didn't work. As soon as the tech pressed on my abdomen I knew I wasn't going to be able to hold it any longer, starting having massive spasms and leaking a ton, and had to quick get to the bathroom so I didn't pee all over the table. Vaginal ultrasound came up negative for any cysts or other gynecological issues that can be seen with an ultrasound.
