I've been reading some posts that say these "blue" meds work better for some people here than the "red" ones like AZO and I'd like to try it. Is there anything like them available over the counter?

I think cystex might be the closest thing? And it has a nonblue formula which is nice. I've used it a few times with success but pyridium seems to work. better for me so I usually go back to that. Anyway worth a shot to see how it works for you.

Oh, I do use Cystex, but mostly to prevent UTIs. I agree that Pyridium (I use the CVS brand version of AZO) works better for the irritation though. I guess I could ask my doctor about one of the RX ones and see how that goes (if I can afford them!) Thanks.

I much prefer the blue meds...they work longer and gentler for me.They are not as fast as Pyridium though.

My doctor wrote me a prescription for one of these meds today, telling me that it was available in a generic and would be cheaper than buying AZO in large quantities. I was really excited about trying it, but when I went to pick up the prescription, it was $172 and some change for one month's supply! I can't do that, so I went and bought ANOTHER box of AZO. :-(

I had the same problem. My insurance doesn't cover urelle, so it would be over $100 so I have never tried it. OTC Azo doesn't do much for me.

yeah doctors usually really have no idea what these things actually cost!

My doctor just put me on Urelle-it is somewhat expensive even with my insurance. I looked it up on line with my pharmacy/insurance and its $45.00 for 30 pills. Do they have a generic for this? Hope so.

My doctor ended up writing me a prescription for phenazopyridine, which my insurance apparently still doesn't cover, but as a generic it comes out MUCH cheaper than buying AZO in boxes of 30 tablets. Maybe someday they will come out with a generic for Utira-C or one of those, and I'll get to try it.

So the $172 was for the brand name (Pyridium)?

The $172 was for Utira-C, which apparently has no generic and is not covered at all by my insurance. None of the "blue" meds are. :-(

Oh ok. Well I hope the red prescription ones help you.

I went and tried to get the Urelle filled but they were out of stock; plus the fact it was $45.00 I can't afford it. As I told my husband the $45.00 isn't that high (I've seen higher) but at the time I just paid all of our mail-order ones off plus the fact that it would be this amount every month. So no thanks.

Yes, the manufacturer of Urelle has put out the generic form of this drug. It's called Darpaz. Urelle runs a little over $700 retail price for a 90-day supply (360 tablets) at Wal-Mart. Darpaz is a little over $400 retail for a 90-day supply.

That's retail price. If you have insurance your cost would depend on your policy.

I did ask Wal-mart and they said no that there is no Generic, but when I looked on line with Care-mark (our mail order pharmacy) it shown that it was and the co-pay was $30.00 for a 3 month supply. I told the pharmist(?) to hold the prescription till I was able to get it filled. I guess I need to call around and see who has the generic version. Thanks.

Pharmacies cannot pull up Darpaz (the generic Urelle) because it is the same manufacturer as Urelle. So in their systems it doesn't show up.
Edited to say: A better explanation: If a pharmacy tries to pull up a generic form of Urelle, it won't show in their systems. But if you ask specifically for Darpaz, they can key it in and it will come up.

I called HEB pharmacy and they said that yes its in generic and they have it. They will call Walmart and transfer prescription to their store. Thankfully, I have good insurance and it will cost me $10.00. Told them I will pick it up after work.

Thank you for posting the thing about Darpaz. I picked up my prescription for urelle today and it was over $100 with insurance. I about had a fit, especially if I have to take it long term.
Everyone should know this information about there being a generic because as someone pointed out, it's not in the system. The CVS pharmacist actually had to go to the shelf and look and there it was.
So next time, I'm going to ask my GP to write the prescription for that instead and hope it's at least a bit better than $100!
