Hello everyone. I haven't been on in a very long time, but could really use your help now. I have been having a major flair for over 3 weeks, and I don't know what to do. I had been on antibiotics for a few months due to Lyme's disease. First I was on Clarithrimycin for 3 weeks, then 3 weeks of Doxycyclin, then 2 days of Cipro. My pain really seemed to start when I started the Doxy. My big question is, does anyone think all these antibiotics could have sent me into a major flair? And if so, how long should it take to calm down. I am on 2 Elmiron a day, the IC diet, and just statred back up on Atarax today, 50mg a day. I ended up in the E.R on Christmas because the pain was so bad. Can anyone please give me some advice, especially if you have ever flaired from any of these antibiotics? I have been crying everyday and I'm scared this pain may never go away. Thank You!:loco:

Well almost everytime I've been on any antibiotics, I end up in a flare as well. That Doxycycline is wicked stuff--it made me so sick to my stomach, along with a nice flare when I was on them for a sinus infection. I think with all of those meds, for so long, plus the stress on your body being sick, combined, it could definitely send you into a big flare. Whenever I get sick, even just a simple cold, I end up in pain. I can imagine it much worse with Lyme disease. I am having a pretty bad time now myself, my bladder seems SO sensitive lately for the past few months, it's maddening. Most of the time I can deal with it, but there are those days ya wonder how you can hang on through it. I would think it would settle once you are done with the meds, possibly a few days after the doses are done. Hmmm...in the meantime you can try a heating pad, warm bath (with epsom salt maybe?), did they give you any pain meds at all to take any edge off? Pyridium can help ease the pain sometimes in those emergencies--you can only take them for a few days but it helps calm down your bladder lining and soothes a bit to make it all bearable.
I understand, as we all do here, that flares are just horrible, and it is a really tough thing to deal with, especially for weeks at a time! I too have times where I feel it will never end, but I promise it will! :grouphug:

Thank you for responding. Yes, the e.r gave me some vicoden to help me through this. I have been trying everything to get things to calm down. Lots of water, pyridium, pain meds, hot baths and heating pad. It seems that when you're in all that pain it will never end. It's weird because when I first get up my bladder feels ok, but then after I get up and go to the bathroom the pain starts again.

Anne,
Do you have any aloe vera? Sometimes just taking 2 or 3 can help with a flare. Maybe Prosed would be a good prescription to ask for to get you through this. You may be retaining and having to push more when you urinate. Did the ER check you for retention?

Hi Anne,
I wouldn't try the aloe vera right now if you've not taken it before, the aloe vera can help some of us & irritate others. It also needs to be an ic-friendly brand, like Desert Harvest. Many of the health food store brands can flare us. It sounds like you're doing the right things. You're following a strict IC diet, right? Sometimes I have to ultra-bland my food when I'm flaring & just eat very very mild foods like eggs, rice, plain vegetables. I hope you feel better soon,
