I am new to the board, but have been lurking for sometime. My doctor recently put me on Hyosamine for bowel and bladder spasms. It has helped the pain tremendously. Does anyone else use this med? I am on a use as needed basis. So far, I don't have to use it alot, but it really helps. So thankful something is finally helping.

Hyoscyamine sulfate is an anti-cholinergic (or anti-spasmodic.) It can be purchased as a generic, which is great. It is also one of the five ingredients in most of the "pee blue" meds such as Urelle and Prosed.
I have found it useful in emergencies, along with pyridium, which is mainly an analgesic and helps me with burning type of pain that can accompany a bad flare.

Many years ago I was in the hospital to some RX and I had to hold my urine to show a full bladder. After the procedure I couldn’t relax my urethra to urinate, the pain was extreme and I was loosing my mine. I remembered a nurse that came in the restroom and inject me something direct in my arm, in just minutes I could urinate. I asked her what she injected me and she said Buscopan (Hyoscymine).

I have used this, Dr. seem to really like this med. For me it caused retention but I am really prone to having meds cause mr retention, it also made my vission blurry. Having said this I do occasionally use it I just can't use it regularly, I can get away with a few pills here and there, and it does help with spasams.

cozynana, I have taken hyoscamine for several years as needed, for IBS. It is a wonder drug as far as I am concerned! Since being diagnosed with IC last spring I have read about taking it for things like IC. As someone mentioned, there is a generic for this drug. Mine is the "under-the-tongue" pill, but when my gut is full of barbed wire I just pop one of those little white pills and before long I feel normal again. For me, I am not sure how or if it helps IC in any way, but at the very least it should help with the bowel spasms. I carry some with me at all times! But be careful, because they are kinda powdery and can easily break. I keep mine in a tiny plastic container with a lid.
Good luck with the Hy-o!

Thanks for the info. It does help both my bowels and bladder/vagina area. I don't know why, but it does. I am lucky that I take the little blue pill that dissolves under the tongue. I always carry them, just in case. I have not had to use them all the time. Such a relief.
