Just thought I would share what happened to me recently, and truth be told I don't have anyone else to share this with, and in some way it may helps others in my position.

A few weeks ago I got a stomach flu and spent a week in bed, I then had to take my FIL for tests out of town and got really tired, which caused a relaspe of the flu and 4 mores days in bed, so tired I could hardly lift my head off the pillow.

At this point my husband wanted me to go to the dr. but I assured him it was just an IC flare from being sick, which does happen to me often. I had done a couple of home UTI tests just to be sure, they were neg in all acounts.

So I spent another week dragging my butt and getting increasing pain, I had to nap every afternoon for 3-4 hour to make it through the dinner, and I was back in bed by 7pm at the lastest. It got so bad I stopped getting up with my husband in the morning to make his coffee, something I never do because if I need too I can go back to bed. The weekend came I was in a lot of pain, and everything I had did not help I was miserable, but I was still sted fast in it is just a really bad flare. I was in big denial.

I had a dr. app on the monday I explained all my symptoms to him, he felt that I had an infection, he did a urine dip which was clean and a WBC which was high so he put me on AB's for an infection. So off I went assured I would feel much better in a few days.

On the Wen my pain increase alot, I could hardley walk down my hallway. My Dr. does not work wens. so I waited to go in to the clinic on Thurs. I did not have an app so I waited forever to see my GP, I could have seen the Dr. on call but the last time I had seen this Dr. he had not even heard of IC, I just did not have the enregy to try to explain from scratch.

When I finally did see my dr. he did a urine test again which came back clean, he did a ekg (?) because now my heart was racing and I had chest pain too, it was fine, heart rate was fast but heart was okay. He did a WBC which was considerably higher than Monday after being on AB's for 4 days. I was on a AB stronger than cipro but in the same family. He decided then that I needed IV ab's as well, 4 pokes later to get an IV in I was finally able to at least lie down at least at this point I had been there 4 hours sitting in the waiting room chairs.

As a side note our clinic is also our emerg, we have no hospital, and they were implementing a new system which was really slowing things up. My stat tests took 2hours to get.

I went back in on Friday and had the tests agian and more IV Ab's, my urine dip was still clean and my WBC was coming down, but I still felt like crap.

After all was said and done my dr. felt I had a UTI which did not get treated soon enough and the infection went into my kidneys, and him and I both feel that I also had an ovarian cyst (comman for me) burst on Wens or thurs. whiched added to the pain. Also at this time from all the AB's I had a raging yeast infection to add insult to injury, I took diflucan and will take another does next week.

I returned to my dr. on Mon at which time my pain level had come down somewhat but I still felt really unwell, so he put me on another 3 days of AB's and predinsone. He repeated the tests dips still fine, WBC still comeing down. He had the culture results from the first urine test but it was clear.

The next couple of days I felt somewhat better not completely better, just woren out. I think I probably feel a bit better as the prednisone tends to pick you up a bit.

I go back to see him again today, I suspect he will not do anymore at time, he has given me another script for AB's in case I get sick over the holidays.

For me I have an immunity problem so I don't ussally get the typical UTI symptoms, they never show up in dips I always have to have them sent out for culture, I have a standing order to be done every 2 weeks, I had become lack at doing this.

So this has been a big slap in the face to me, that if your symptoms suddenly increase we often put it down to something we have done, we should be thinking UTI. Often you read on here that someones is haveing a flare and they don't know why, and it often turns out to be a UTI. So we need to know our own bodies really well.

This has also showed me I need to get a better handle on my urinary retention or this will just happen again, and has happened to me before. I did mention to my Dr. a month or so ago that my retention was getting worse again, but we have tried everthing he can think of to improve this with no luck. Most meds including flowmax and things like that make my retention worse. I discussed this with my dr. and we will start trying otherthings that him or I can find out about in the new year. I don't want to rock the boat right now.

But note to self: I need to post me a big sticky I need to follow Dr.'s orders. My uro said at the first sign of increaded symptoms from my normal I need to take AB's for 3 days and if things are not better I need to call him. In this case I did not do this, I really felt I was just having a bad flare from haveing the flu.

So no more self diagnoseing, it is just sometimes I feel I am at the Dr. so often that they must think I an just attention seeking or loonie. I know my Dr. does not feel this way, but I sometime I think the front end staff does. I don't feel I should have to explain it all to them. My Dr. has said anytime I feel I need to see him to come whether I have an app or not because of how sick I can get so fast.

Thanks for listening to this long post sometimes I can make more sense of things if I write it all down.

Heres hopping for better days to come. MG
