View Full Version : Anybody bothered by 100% whole wheat flour?

When I started on the diet I wasn't sure about the whole wheat issue. That used to be all I ate. Anyway, so I was just having oat bran and unbleached white flour (I adapted some of my recipes) on the diet.
This week I added whole wheat flour to my diet and made some Irish Soda Bread--I started having lots of feeling of pressure in my bladder area. I ate some bread tonight and the pain is very strong now.
I just didn't think that 100% whole wheat flour would be an irritant--but I'm going to go off of it. As we all know the pain isn't worth it.
Anyone else affected?

I can eat white bread which contains wheat and also grain breads, but whole wheat is a problem for me --- it goes through my body like fine sand and gives me diarrhea.

I don't have any problems, but that doesn't mean you would not. It is so individualized. Just pay attention to how you react in the future. :-)

I AM!!! I cannot have wheat flour which is in so many things. However, I can have actual whole grains/wheat like Ezekial breads, which is about the only bread I can eat since I cannot tolerate wheat flour or vinegar. Also UNBLEACHED wheat flour is different and I can tolerate that. It is in pretzels etc...

I haven't been told I have IBS or tested but my OB/GYN is sure that is what I have.
I no only follow a diet for IC but also now for IBS which includes no or little wheat flour.
I've noticed if eat something with a lot of wheat like wheat bread or something with a lot of gluten then I have major tummy upsets, cramps and stuff almost like I have food poisoning. It's awful.
This also sets up an IC flare up. I guess all the pressure on the bladder from the upset bowels.
I now avoid stuff that is 100% wheat plus stuff high in fiber/gluten.
For example I can eat Froot Loops ok a handful at a time like candy. lol But now they added fiber to it. No way I can eat that.
Same with popcorn, all the good for you fiber stuff and so on are out for me.

Thanks for your replies. It was just weird because I found with the unbleached wheat flour I'm fine. So I guess the 100% wheat flour is out for me. I have cooked alot with oat bran (it's found in the cereal section) or I'll grind up actual oats. I just miss the fiber and richer flavor from 100 % wheat--that's why I decided to try it.
I guess I might try Ezekiel bread. I was missing bread so bad that's how I came up with the Irish Soda Bread because you can slice it. I already experimented with using the oats instead of wheat in my recipe and it came out kind of crumby--but really good.
Thanks for reminding me how individualized it is, too. I don't like to try new things. The only thing left I might try once I'm okay is peanut butter--which I love. Almond butter is okay. It seems like some people can handle peanut butter and some can't. After that I'm pretty okay on the diet. I'm happy because overrall I find the diet pretty good for me.

Just a suggestion, for bread, have you tried checking your area for bakeries that make preservative and vinegar-free breads? I found one where I live and while it is a little more expensive, the bread is amazing! :smile tee

I wonder why whole wheat flour would be an issue?
I seem to be ok with breads. I just get breads that have no preservatives and no artificial flavors. I get Arnold or Nature's Pride.

I haven't had a problem but I buy an organic all natural whole wheat bread. It sounds however like there is a problem with you just check the ingredient list to make sure it isn't something else.

Whole wheat and oats are two of the worst irritants to my bladder; it is nothing about preservatives, artificial flavor or vinegar, it is about wheat. Unfortunately these two things so helpful for the body are poisons for my bladder.

Wow since you can't have whole wheat or oats--what do you eat for bread?
That must be hard. Are you okay with corn--like polenta? or corn tortillas?

I am ok with white bread (no preservatives) , white pita bread, white rice cakes and water crackers.
