Hello fantastic people,

I see there have been similar questions lately but I wondered if anyone has any good coping mechanisms for hormonal flares (pre and during menstrual and at ovulation for me). My first flare was due to Yaz, and until I am feeling more secure with the idea and dealt better w/ my vulvar pain I don't want to try another BCP. I have heat, ice, all the regular stuff and personally can handle a bit of Advil.

For people w/ V, VV or other vulvar/pudendal nerve pain, does yours flare at particular points in your cycle too?

I've been stressing over the following: I have seen several posters who say they started with their period being the worst time and then after getting their IC and other problems under decent control and managing their menstrual flares, they later started having increasingly worse and longer flares from other reasons such as new diet triggers or activities. Is this how it usually works? My period is still the worst time for me and this makes a year of symptoms. The rest of the time, it's usually improving bit by bit with treatment.

As a quick update, I'm currently trying CystoProtek, and was having regular "rescue" instills until I decided to take some time to try the CP and give my urethra as long of a chance as I could stand to calm down from the cathing. I also have two PTs and am pursuing vulvar pain treatment.

I think this part of the forum gets a lot of hits from new patients, and I want to be as encouraging as possible to them. There is a treatment plan out there for you, and I believe it's highly unlikely that you will not be visiting this forum in the future in increasingly better shape than you are now.

Period flares are usually due to the sudden drop of estrogen and the rise of progesterone which a hormone that is very irritating to IC and VV.
The BC pill apparently smoothed out these peaks and drops, a BC pill higher in estrogen than progestin works best for most people with IC.

I dont know what your Gyno's policy is on BC pills and age, but I do know that a lot of them dont feel it is age that is such a risk factor but smoking and medical history. Personally, I did take BC pills to transition into menopause and had no problem with it.

I used to get the worst hormonal flares. I mean unbareable. I started continuous birth control and I don't have the hormonal flares any more. I researched this board a lot because I read that some pills made people feel better and some made them feel worse. I ended up trying the generic form of Alesse and it's been great. I wouldn't say it made my IC better on its own, but the fact that I don't have periods now makes my IC better.
