Hey everyone.

I just had my six month checkup with my IC Specialist. His clinic is about an hour and a half away

Things went well. Discussed upping the amitriptyline when in a flare, getting pregnant later, etc etc.

However, like ICDonna I was helped a lot by a hydrodistention.

I have been under a lot of stress and cannot get my flare under control. I asked to do another hydro and he declined, saying he only liked to do them every 2-3 years.

This is because of the risks that come along with the anasthesia, such as 1 in 50,000 dying, strokes, heart attacks, etc.

He also told me not to take pyridum (OTC or prescribed) for more than 10 days out of the month due to the adverse affects on your liver.

Has anyone else had a problem where the doctor does not want to do another hydro?

If you're not in agreement with your doctor, my suggestion is to seek a second opinion.

No physician will object to that and it doesn't mean you have to change doctors.

Thank you for our reply, Donna.

I am seeing my primary care doctor tomorrow, so we will see what she says.

I know that you have had numerous hydodistentions without any risks. I am confused why he won't do this.

My IC specialist says this is because of the increased risks each time you go under anasthesia.

Do you have one roughly every year?

You need to talk to your doctor again. I never had a problem with having a hydro done. My doctor though, will only do them every 6 months (twice a year) if I need them. Since you are going to your family doctor soon, ask him and see what he thinks.

Cassie,

I have gotten relief from hydros like Donna. I would get a second opinion. Dr. Rackely at the Cleveland clinic explained to us why we do get relief. In laymen terms, when the bladder is distended and exposes the cracks and bleeds, our bodies natural defenses rushes in to heal itself. I was getting 2-3 a yr and I may ask my uro to do another one before I have my surgery, since it's going to be a while, I have just been hurting so bad and I need some relief. January can't come soon enough!!!

hugs and blessings

Hey, thanks for everyone's replies!

Today is not a very good day. My endometriosis and IC are flaring up, so I'm in a lot of pain.

My primary said she would not recommend me doing a hydro more than once a year.

I guess I can live with that, for now.
