I have no idea where to post this, but here goes..........

For those of you who have had a Colonoscopy, has the prep drink you are given beforehand, impacted your pain level with your IC?

I haven't heard anyone mention this. I am not afraid of having this procedure done, but I am concerned that the drink will bring on a terrible IC flare.

Thank you,
Lyn

I've done one colonoscopy since developing IC, & the prep did not flare my bladder. In fact, I'm doing another one on friday because part of my colon was not totally clear the last time. There are alot of old posts on this, & I was worried too the first time. I had no trouble with my bladder. Good luck with your procedure.

I posted a similar question this week. I am using the Miralax/Ducolax prep that is mixed with Gatorade and wanted to to know what flavor of Gatorade was safe to drink. I got one reply from IC Donna and she used to drink blue but I doubt she had to down 64 ounces in two hours. A glass of it is lot different than downing 64 ounces. Might be okay with a glass of it but am concerned with 64 ounces.

I asked the nurse at the doctors office if I could dilute the Gatorade with 50% water and they said I could not. When the Surgi Center called today, I asked the same question and they told me to dilute it. Not sure what I will do but I definitely will be taking Prelief with it. I am trying Frost Glacier Freeze. Selected it because it is a pretty color!!

I will post Friday or Saturday and let you know if I flared.

By the way, the Miralax/Doculax prep is what the doctor uses the most. Miralax is supposedly tasteless. My sister uses it and I had her put it in water and she said it is abosolutely tasteless.

If you go for the Visicol or Osmo prep pills be sure to do your research. They have the potential for some serious side effects.

Thank you for your replies.

Karen, its good to know you didn't have a problem during this procedure.

irfran - That would be great if you would post after your colonoscopy this week. Best of luck!

I did the Miralax/Ducolax prep with Gatorade (frost glacier freeze). I decided to try the Gatorade without Prelief and I did not flare at all. In fact, the prep was very tasty. I am a major gagger and had no trouble drinking the prep.

If I had known this prep was available, I would have had a colonoscopy much sooner.

irfran - Thanks for letting us know how you did. I will suggest that when I schedule. I have an appt with the dr. in 2 weeks.

Its good to know that the prep drink may very well not be an issue for a colonoscopy. Thanks so much!

Grrrr. Computer just ask my last message.

Just wanted to say you might want to try a little Gatorade before the big event just to see if you flare. 64 ounces is a lot of Gatorade. As I stated I did not use Prelief and had no flare. I do know that citric acid is in the drink and I don't have any idea if I have problems with citric acid. Be sure to ask your doctor is you can take Prelief with the mix.

Just a few thoughts to help before the test. l. Take a good stack of reading material to the bathroom. 2. I liked drinking the mix with a straw and a lot of ice (easier to get a lot of liquid down). It really didn't taste bad but it is a lot of fluid. 3. Use a little Vaseline (you know where) before the party begins. 4. Have a few extra pairs of underwear handy (I didn't need them but it gave me extra security). 5. I put an extra chair in the bathroom to sit on when I was on the throne of honor. Later on, I did feel confident to go and use the computer. 6. Yes, I did take a portable phone in the bathroom with me (my sister called a few times to see how the party was going). At least we had a few good giggles. 7. I used pre-moistened wipes with aloe in them (not sure if those with VV can use them. 8. Just in case I felt nauseated (I never did) I had a bucket sitting beside the throne. When we installed a light in the bathroom that has lights, vent, night light and heater I thought it was stupid. Must admit I enjoyed flipping the switch for extra warmth.

Print out some info to take to the doctor about this prep. I did my searches under Miralax Ducolax Colonoscopy. This is the only prep my doctor now uses. He only uses the pills if someone insists.

Good luck.

I am supposed to go for another colonoscopy this year. I have had two before I got IC. I am no longer concerned about the prep, but I am worried about the procedure. What if I have to go to the bathroom while on the table. Will the meds that they give you, prevent that from happening?
Any advise will be helpful.

My gosh that happened to me. The doctor wasn't there yet so the nurses unhooked me and I made a dash for the bathroom. I thought I only had to tinkle but the dreaded diarrhea wasn't over. The nurses are used to everything happening and are very accommodating. Next test I am going to ask if I can start the prep earlier than 4 PM the day before the test. I had an early morning appointment and feel if I had a few more hours the diarrhea would have been over.

Next time I am going to ask that the IV isn't started quite so early...........it really made me want to pee. As far as the diarrhea goes, I am sure it happens a lot there and as I said, they unhooked me and I ran. They also said as long as it is liquid and not solid, the doctor hoses you out. I know, more info than you needed to know.

Don't worry about the test..............I am sure they have seen it all.

Actually, I wasn't worried about diarrhea. I was worried about having the urge to pee.
I was at the uro's office waiting for her to look inside my bladder. The nurse had done her prep work and I was left there. Needless to say after 15 minutes I had to pee and no one responded to my calls for assistance. I had this stick in my urethra so I was afraid to move.
All is well now and I didn't die from it but it makes me fearful of being trapped in that type of situation.

Trude, I just had the colonoscopy done on friday & I was worried about the same thing, but I had no problem. My main symptoms are freq. & urg., but I must have been a little dehydrated from the prep because I did not have any urgency at all. I get precancerous colon polyps so the dr. keeps a close check on things. Worst case scenerio is that they have to put you on a bed pan. Don't worry!

Just got back the results from the biopsy and they are negative. Of the 3 kinds of polyps to have, I had the one that is not good. I knew this immediately following the procedure and he was pretty sure it wasn't cancer but he had to send it away.

I know the doctor will want to keep a check on this and according to the nurse, it will be outlined in the letter I get from them. Her guess was another repeat colonoscopy in 2 years.

Dodged the bullet this time...just lucky I guess.

If you are putting off having a colonoscopy, please go do it. As I stated earlier, the prep was no big deal and the test was nothing. I was out like a light. Just think if I hadn't done it............doctor said in two or three years it might have turned to cancer.
