Just a quick question. I'm still new to understanding flares with diet, and I'm still trying to understand how long it should take for me to flare after I eat something that isn't good for my IC. For a solid 2 months straight I have put myself on a VERY strict form of the IC diet safe list because I'm too scared to eat, knowing what suffering it could possibly cause me. Well, my symptoms have gotten much milder, so I decided to test a store bought/packaged sugar cookie yesterday. I ate a sugar cookie at 2:30 yesterday, and it is now 7:45 here in Texas, and I haven't felt any difference in my symptoms as of 2:30 yesterday till now. If I haven't flared in this time frame, can I assume I'm safe with these store bought sugar cookies?

I know sugar cookies are on the IC safe list, but I've always thought it had to be baked by me because I know what ingredients were in there. The sugar cookie I ate was store bought with a ton of other ingredients that could possibly be questionable. I decided to give it a shot yesterday to see if I could tolerate another thing. My doctor told me that I'll know if something bothers me either on the day I eat it, or 24 hours afterwards. It's been OVER 24 hours, and I still seem to be fine, so I can only assume that I am safe with the sugar cookie. What do you think?

I think you are probably safe with the cookies! Many of us can eat store purchased products as long as the main ingredients are bladder-friendly.

As for other food, if you don't react in the first 24 hours, it is a pretty good bet that you can eat the food.

Remember, you may react differently to foods at different times depending on other things going on.

In the meantime, enjoy the cookies! :-)

In my opinion, you've determined that you are safe with 1 sugar cookie! LOL... You may find that when you eat one, you are ok, but if you eat more than one it may start to bother you. It's just trial and error, but at least you know you can tolerate one! Every time I walk by the cookies at Kroger, I practically salivate over them! Can't have any though because the additives/preservatives in the store bought one really bother me.

Flare times vary with most people, but I think that you can pretty much assume that you are safe. Yipee!!! The previous writer brought up a very good point. You are safe with one cookie. Now, if you eat ten, maybe it would affect you. Maybe not. You just can't tell unless you try it. I too tried a very, very strict diet for a long time. I am so very careful to add new foods. I can't bear to severe pain, so I am so careful. Another thing that happens to some of us is that we might eat one slightly questionable item and be perfectly fine with it. We might be able to eat a second questionable item a day and be fine with it. But if you add the third item, it might be the one that does you in. It is a thing you have to do by trial and error. When I find a new food, it makes me so happy, I just can't tell you. I am up to five fruits, and it's like someone gave me million dollars!!!! In one way, it seems so sad and depressing for us that we have to be so darn thrilled about being able to eat one stupid cookie. But we must continue to look on the bright side and be happy for little favors. Good luck and keep on trying new things. Let us all know so we can give new things a try too.

I would definitely say you are safe with only 1 sugar cookie for sure. I tried the same test with Golden Oreos, which a lot of the ladies on here say they can eat. I had one and had no flare 24 hours later, so I went ahead and ate 8 of them with some milk. BIG MISTAKE! I flared badly within two hours, and continued to flare from it for one hour. That's why testing by having a small quantity like one, waiting 24 hours, if no flare try eating 3, if no flare in another 24 hours, try eating a larger amount etc... is the best way to tell if a food will truly flare you, or you may end up regretting a cookie like me... and I'd hate to see that happen to you :-(

Very smart lady, to stop after one cookie!

Frequently I can tolerate small amounts of questionable foods from time to time, but large amounts or daily cheating catches up with me.
