Hello all,

I haven't posted here before but a friend let me know about this site after I talked about the bladder problems I have been having for a year, and the fact that the doctor and uro I was referred to weren't getting any answers for me.

Anyways today I went to a second uro for another opinion as the first uro thought my symptoms were "behavorial" even though I had blood in my urine for some time.

This new uro is much better and was happy to answer my questions and made me feel at ease. He did a cystoscopy in office (which was very painful), and did give me the IC diagnosis - which I had been suspecting along with my GP.

So here's the question - after a cystoscopy I assume is is normal to have blood in the urine, but how long should this last for? Also I am in a lot of pain when I pee - it feels like peeing glass, is this normal? If I wait a day or two does this typically get better? I'm just wondering because if not I will go to a walk in for something to help with the pain, but don't want to wait at one if this shouldn't happen for too long.

The new uro has started me on Elmiron and I go back in 8 weeks for a follow up. I know if can take a long time to see effects from this medication but I am praying it helps so that I can get back to my normal life, and so I can sleep at night.

Hi Jenny,

The cysto could have irritated your urethra for sure. But another possiblility is that you developed a bladder infection. Sometimes bacteria can get in there when they insert the catheter... maybe just go to a walk in and get your urine sampled to be sure that your not dealing with an infection. Also they could give you a rx for pyridium(the stuff that makes your urine red), that would numb the pain until a. the irritation settles down or b. if there is an infection, until the antibiotics kick in. Good luck.

This is normal, you described it very well. Pirydium is very good for this type of feeling.

Good luck
