I need to have a small laser medical procedure done, it is no big deal, however the ELmiron (300mg per day) has made me a bleeder. This means that I don't stop bleeding after a prick test for like 15 minutes (without pressure) so I cannot have the procedure done. I am wondering if anyone else has stopped taking ELmiron for like 2 weeks and gotten worse. I could got right back on. I have been on for about 7 months and am feeling a slight improvement with the constant bladder pain. My other thought was just going down to 100mg once a day just to keep some in my system, I am going to ask my Dr. what she thinks about that. But I was wondering if anyone has gone off for a short period of time and what your experiences were. Thanks

I was off it for 8 months and all my symptoms came right back ,big time. I came off it for a gastro intestinal thing whech they never found the cause of it. I found out it was Splenda causing my problem.Once I came off Splenda the burning in my belly left.

Usually anticoagulants are stopped for about a week before any procedure. I know I had to stop my aspirin for that length of time.
I don't take elmiron.

I have had a handful of procedures/surgeries and I was told that the only medicine that I need to be off is Coumadin-which is a blood thinner. The doctors said I didn't need to get of the Elmiron. But check with your doctor to make sure, as they all have their own opinions.

I had to quit taking Elmiron 14 days prior to gall bladder removal surgery last year and I'm only on 100mg/day. I remember sitting in the preregistration appt and the nurse calling all around the hospital to get a unanimous agreement from Dr's who had come across the issue previously. The final order to discontinue was from the in-house pharmacist. I was allowed to start the med the following day without any issues.
Just a side note--I passed the timed bleeding test at pre-op, however I popped a steri-strip a couple hours after surgery and bled quite freely. All I or the nurse could attribute that amount of bleeding to was the Elmiron.
Of course this is only my experience. However you do need to find out asap whether you need to stop or not as if you wait too close to your surgical date it might end up being postponed.
Wishing you well.....

I am having surgery on the 24th for interstim removal. Im on 400mg twice a day and my doctor told me to quit taking it a week before the surgery. I would definatly ask your doctor though. I havnt had problems with bleeding for long periods of time, just brusing. Hopefully since it takes so long to see results with elmiron maybe it wont completly wear out in one or two weeks.
