View Full Version : Nausea as a symptom?

Hi everyone,

Long time no post...things have been going a little better. I think the Elavil has helped tremendously, though I am in a bit of a pre-menstrual flare right now. Blech.

My initial symptom of IC back in May was simply nausea -- nausea that lasted through to July despite many rounds of antibiotics (for what I now know were non-existent UTIs.)

The nausea gave way to serious pelvic pain in August and September, though I think the meds and PT has helped that tremendously (along with the diet).

Recently, however, my nausea has returned. This has made me quite nervous as I don't ever see it listed as a symptom of IC. I've had many a blood test, etc., to rule out hopefully other horrible things (IC is horrible enough!) But I'm wondering if anyone else struggles with nausea, either when they are having a flare, or just on a day-to-day basis.

I don't necessarily get the nausea coupled with pain...I realize sometimes pain can be bad enough to cause nausea. Often mine coincides with typical burning, frequency issues. But sometimes the nausea itself is my ONLY symptom.

Anyone else out there experienced this? I suppose it's possible that I have a UTI, but I highly doubt it. I am also due for a colonscopy to rule out IBS, though I don't seem to have any symptoms (my doctor just wants to rule out other things, I guess, before committing to IC -- although I don't think it could be anything else, given my symptoms.) Does anyone out there with both IBS and IC get naseous? Anyone get nausea just as a symptom of IC?

Thanks!
Emily

Some people respond to pain with nausea, but if you are continually feeling nauseated you really need to see your doctor.

Warm healing thoughts headed your way.

Hi Emily,
I get nauseous 3-5 days before my period every month. What I eat seems to affect how bad it is. Also migraines sometimes during that time frame. I am just mentioning this b/c it could be a hormonal thing for you maybe?
And someone else mentioned pain can make you nauseous. That is definitely true too.

I tend to get nauseous, off and on, too. When I get a flare, I tend to get nauseous when I have to go to the bathroom....even if I don't feel like I have to go urgently.

I was nauseated for DAYS before and during my first IC flare. I lost like 10 pounds.

I have IBS/IC and nausea right around my cycle, if I am stressing and if I am flaring. I found these "candies" called Reeds Ginger Candies at the health food store. Ginger is not the best for IC, but I have found if I take a tiny, I mean TINY piece of this candy (it's gooey) and place it on the roof of my mouth, there goes the nausea. I have never had it CAUSE a flare. I don't have round the clock nausea, so if you are having that, you might want to get that looked at.

One other thought - you have no IBS symptoms, but they want to put you through a colonoscopy. You HAVE IC symptoms, but they are not suggesting you have a cystoscopy? Why not?

I'll continue the motion that you should specifically address this w/ your doctor. I will also pass along that my first two rounds of freq/urg/pelvic tenderness were preceeded by weeks of nausea and a late cycle, so first I was put through repeated (wildly unnecessary) pregnancy tests and then UTI antibiotics.

However, I'll also tell you that I personally struggled very hard with GI side effects from Elmiron for a month before stopping it to see what would happen. Most people have no side effects. Some people can get through it, in some it wears off, but in me it was too bad to continue and began to resolve itself within a couple days of stopping. Nausea and lower/upper GI tenderness were the most acute and I lost a great deal of weight. I also had reflux.

Hopefully this is just an unpleasant side symptom for you, but do please get examined. I have never had a flare from ginger candy either, but you might ask around and see what acid medicine like Pepcid or Prilosec is well tolerated. If you tried that for awhile and felt better, it might tell you something. My GP said sometimes nausea is the first sign of reflux or heartburn before it starts burning too much.

Glad you are feeling better, and hang in there!

I get a lot of nausea when I am in a flare I guess because of the pain, but I notice I flare more with my stress level, and I also have an ulcer, so that aids in the nausea too whenever I eat something naughty or my stomach is empty. Maybe lots of stress causing all of it?
