We had planned a weekend at the beach (arrived home yesterday afternoon) and, since I had checked the campgrounds earlier in the week and we weren't positive we'd be going Friday evening or on Saturday morning ---- and there were lots and lots of unreserved spots, we just took off Friday around 6:00 pm. It usually takes about two hours to get there so we figured we'd be there and checked in before dark. What we didn't plan was road construction that held us up --- plus there were others who also didn't plan!

The end result was that we finally found a camping spot in pitch black darkness, using our headlights and flashlights out the side windows. The only reason it was empty was that the site number sign was knocked over!. We pulled in, then my daughter and I walked about a mile back to register (afraid to leave the space). We ended up with a horrible case of the giggles and canned smoked oysters and crackers for dinner. Lesson learned! Next time I make a reservation!

We DID have fun though! :)

Glad it worked out! It takes a special personality to enjoy a situation that doesn't go exactly according to plan :).

One thing I can definitely say is that there is no place on earth as dark as an Oregon State Parks campground at 9:00 pm this time of year! Husband Terry has a heart condition so he stayed with the motor home while daughter, dalmation, and I hiked with our flashlights!

You can make reservations in an Oregon State Park? I didn't know any State Parks took revs. You can't here in TN. That's good to know.

I am glad you found a spot. I bet Meggie enjoyed her walk. :)

There's a set-up in Oregon that allows you to reserve camping space in some of the most popular state parks. It costs an extra $5 for the reservation and you have to put the entire stay on a credit card in advance; if you cancel you forfeit the $5 and if you cancel within a few days before your reservation, you have to pay the first night anyhow. It's still lots cheaper than hotels --- and we can take our Meggie without paying extra.

You can also reserve spots at state parks in Maine and Vermont. We do it all the time and they do not charge extra for it. They will take your credit card number over the phone, but they do not charge it till you get there. We usually just pay cash once there. Glad you had a good time.
