Talk about perfect timing. My husband's partner at work gave him a cold water extract coffee maker forhelping her with some major project. Little did she know that she had just made my life so much easier and nicer. I am starting the first batch of coffee in it tonight. It takes a pound of good coffee and nine cups of cold water, it sits all night and in the morning I release a stopper and all of this concentrated acid free coffee comes down (about 5 cups) Then it takes 1 ounce of coffee to 4 ounces of hot water to reconstitute it.
Here's the name of the coffee maker:
The Toddy Coffee Maker

Thats sound really neat. I never heard of a coffe maker like that. I would be interested to hear how it goes? Thanks for posting
Kelly
How does it take the acid out? Sounds great!

When I was in college (way back in the late 80's at the University of Oregon....go Ducks) I used to stop at this coffee house EVERY morning that made cold water extract. I guess, by steeping it in cold water for 12 hours, then letting it drain through a special multi layered fiberous filter, it removes the acidic components (leaves it in the residue.) Iknow that it used to be the smoothest, sweetest cup of coffee and I really missed it brewed that way once I left school. (Everytime we are in Eugene I drag my husband over to the coffee place...I always tell him, he hooked me on it made that way.) I also love French pressed coffee but that is just plain strong and not good for my bladder although I bought some coffee at a Cannon Beach coffee tasting bar that was low acid. (and organic, and labor friendly....always PC) it is very strong tasting but sweet and the bitterness is gone. I always french press that stuff. It is not allowed in the Mr. coffee. (Too spendy...like over 10.00 pound, special occasion stuff) Very cool concept at that place...like a winery, where you taste the different coffees...don't pay...then you can choose to leave or buy some. They actually let you order coffee and bill you for it through the mail. Talk about trust. I love living in the NW. I can get you the name of that place too, if anyone is interested. VERY nice people and very accomodating.

I have a toddy maker. You can pick them up at most of the coffee specialty shops. I don't use mine all the time since I've found some low acid coffee that doesn't require the preparation, but I have to confess the cold brewed does taste better.

Good luck with it Tracey! Sounds great! Definately an awesome gift. Giving up coffee, to me, is like giving up one of my kids... can't do it!

So far, so good. Only problem is that it is more expensive to make it this way. One pound makes about 10 full C. of coffee. Of course, you only use a few ounces to reconstitute it. Still, I only made the stuff 3 days ago and I only have a little left. (Maybe enough through tomorrow) considering my expensive taste in coffee...This could be a spendy habit. It is very good though, maybe through special occasions.
Take care all.... Tracey
I just realized that address is Houston! Woo Hoo!!!!

So Blue...are you close enough to Houston to get one? I know Texas is a bit big, so I'm just wondering if you'd be able to just go pick one up or if you have to order.
Ah...a nice fire outside...Our weather is just getting to the point that those ideas could be considered. Yucky today though. As we like to say up here, it's what makes it such a beautiful place. .....Those crappy days interspersed with nice ones....
Tracey
I could, I'm about 100 miles from there. I've been looking at them on the internet. They aren't all that expensive! I'm going to keep my eye out for it, and if I can't find it, in say a Dillards, Foleys or something. I'll either order it, or make my way to that store!

Have you just called them and asked them to send it to you? Could be easier than running around. I'm not sure where my husband's friend picked it up, except that she was in Houston a while ago...maybe that's where...
Tracey
I haven't called yet. I was just telling my husband about it. Well, all of this talk about coffee, I had to have some. I bought some regular coffee today, and now I'm hurting!

I found a place at the coast (Cannon Beac h, Or) that sells the most awesome blends of coffee..organic and labor friendly. I am ordering my coffee from them...it is so good..
They recommend a French Roast for the cold water extract. Just FYI, coarser ground.
