I was looking at the threads in this section today, and saw there was no information about Flomax for urethra spasms. My doctor prescribed this for me when I was first diagnosed with IC b/c my urethra spasms were off the charts. She told me this medicine was designed for prostrate discomfort in males, but it has been found that it also works for calming urethra spasms. I also take Detrol as well, but find the Flomax really helps with the external burning sensation/pain/and preventing urethra spams when I get instills. I wanted to let everyone know how much Floxmax helps me, just in case they have bad urethra spams as well and wanted to give it a shot.

I took flomax for urinary retention and it did help a little. I have pelvic floor dysfunction and when my muscles aren't cooperating nothing really helps. It did give me some relief however.

I take flomax for urethra spasms and it does really seem to help. I've been taking it for about 6 months and I've definitely noticed some relief.

I don't think there is a generic available yet. it's primary use is to treat prostrate inflammation in men, but it's also prescribed for urethra spasms in women.

I'm liking this idea of Flomax because you can't take pyridium forever. Is it something you take once daily or when needed?
I've got so many drug names swimming around in my head that I can't keep them straight.

If you have bad chronic urethra spasms (like me) you can take 1x daily. If you have periodic episdoes, you can take as needed. One of the side effects is light-headed or dizziness, which did effect me at first. My doctor told me to take at bedtime to reduce the side effects. Hope this helps!

@ jenny bird - thank you. I've got my fingers crossed for this drug. I'm going to see if my GP will write a prescription for Flomax until I can see the new urologist.
Any other significant side effects other than the dizziness?

You can google flowmax and get all the side effects, there is lots of them, but it does not mean you will get all of the side effects but you should be aware of them so you know if you happen to get them.
As I said in another post I tried it but I took it for retention, I was not told it would help with anything else. Anyways it caused my retention to get much worse, I was told it could not do that to me to keep taking it so I did till I could not pee at all. This does not happen to everybody, and I have heard about it being prescribed to women for retention, it just was not for me.

that's funny about hearing it was only for retention. I've actually never heard it was for retention-just for urethra spasms.
The dizziness was the only significant side effect I've had from the Flomax. Everyones different though. I had a horrible reaction to Elmiron-but it seems like most can tolerante it.

I was told it was to relax the muscel in the lower urinary track, so that they can relax so you can pee, so it amounts to about the same thing, relax the muscels to stop the spasams.
I think Dr, are like car sales men tell you what they think you need to hear.:biglaugh:
