While I wait for my elmiron to start working I am taking 10 mg of Vesicare... It doesnt work as good as I hoped and I was wondering if ya'll could tell me what works for you. I know it is different for everyone, but I was just wondering.

Vesicare is primarily an antispasmodic. It's possible you need more than that; I did (do.) I relied heavily on Urelle, one of the urinary tract antiseptics. It has antispasmodic, analgesic and antiseptic properties and can be taken long-term safely. It helped me a lot, and I was able to back off it periodically as my symptoms ebbed. I also used pyridium sometimes when I had burning or stinging pain. Pyridium is not recommended for long-term use.

I just wanted to mention I have absolutely NO pain. Just thought I'd give that information too.

I, too use Urelle (actually the generic) when I need it, and it works great for me. I started on Vesicare, too, and was told it could take up to three weeks to begin working. I took it, and then Oxybutnin (generic) for over a year, but it never seemed to help that much. I get more relief from Urelle.

I LOVE urelle. i take it when i feel a flare starting and it usually helps me a great deal, and sometimes even calms it down with only 1 dose. I also find my IC bothers me more at night, so sometimes I take one before going to bed. It allows me to sleep and not have to get up during the night to go to the bathroom. If I have to take more than a few times, I know it's time for a bladder instill.

I am looking for an antiseptic only, not in combination with antispasmodic (because of urinary retention).
Would anybody know of something?
I take Buscopan for the spasms, and I had a doctor give my Cipro (Ciprofloxin) for any possible infection problems. I use the Mayo clinic book. I think it may be the same online.

Goodnightmoon I have tried Buscopan in the past and it made my retention much worse, it may not do this to you but just be aware this type of med increases my retention.

I used to use Urelle and I LOVED it! I started backing down from it and now when I use it, it makes me flare even more! A new doctor also told me that Elmiron and Urelle actually interact with each other, which could have been a cause of my stomach issues.

Goldfinch- When you say you had burning and stinging pain, would it be burning and stinging pain while you urinated (like it would with a urinary tract infection) or was it just a burning/stinging sensation from your pubic area and down. I'm starting to notice this weird burning/stinging sensation around the middle of my pubic area, and sometimes around surrounding my perinium area. It fluctuates where it wants to go. Sometimes I think I'm feeling burning or stinging around my urethra area, but it doesn't burn or sting when I pee. I don't believe I'm feeling it in my bladder and there's no burning or stinging sensation vaginally.

Look up and I don't know how to spell this Volvodinia, or VV see if you symptoms sound like that, some people with IC get this too, it is just one of those things like IBS, and PFD that IC people seem to get with IC. I hope I am not sending you off in the wrong direction but it can't hurt you to read about it too.
Have a good day MG

I looked those up thinking that it might be that, but, the symptoms they describe with Vulvodynia or VV don't really fit me. It's just this strange stinging/almost burning? sensation that's mainly in the middle of my pubic area, and sometimes in the urethra area. But it doesn't burn or sting when I urinate. It was only happening for 2 days straight, but since then, it has just disappeared. This IC thing is so strange. Anyways, thank you so much for bringing that to my attention. Thank goodness that I don't fit the bill for Vulvodynia. That would just be even MORE miserable having something else on top of this IC thing.
