Going to nursing school is bringing up some past issues for me. Learning about how nurses are *supposed* to act (a lot of it is common sense, or should be) is making me think about things that nurses have done to me or said to me that they never should have. Also I just feel like I should be the one in the hospital, not the "healthy" one doing the assessment. So we can learn examination skills we're going to have to examine a partner and they have to examine us (no pelvic or breast exams though thank goodness! lol) and I just feel like I have all this stuff wrong with me that is no one's business. They're going to "find" things doing my exam and probably the person I'm going to be paired with is totally healthy and won't understand. I just feel very uncomfortable about it.

Isnt "examining" your classmate just used as a teaching tool and not an actual diagnostic? Not being one who has gone through nursing school, however I'm not so sure I'd be so open to discuss my ailments with my fellow students.

Right, it's a teaching tool. I'm just not comfortable being a teaching tool especially since what my exam would be teaching isn't "normal" in a lot of areas.

You'll be fine --- and you'll make a wonderful nurse!
Warm hugs,

Oh my, not only will you be great, but think of the wonderful opportunity you have to educate other future nurses about IC! The more people that know, the better!
PS: I am willing to bet that at least half the class has "something" they would rather not share with the class, so don't feel like you are alone....

I thought about that. We have to do a health teaching presentation, but they are going to assign us topics. I would love to do IC though. Thanks Julie!

Just my opinion....I would specifically ask to do IC if you are comfortable with it. Doing the presentation can not only help your fellow students learn about a disease that they now say affects 3 to 8 million people, but you would also give them an insight into your personal condition......helping them become more aware of your situation.
I hope you become a uro nurse someday!!!!

Yeah, I thought about asking. I'm not sure though yet. We may have an opportunity to pick a topic later. We don't have to do it in front of our whole class, just our clinical group (five other people), so there might be something better to do later with IC.
I've been thinking I might want to do women's health like my doctor does. She's an OB-Gyn and a urogynocologist. Their office has another OB-gyn a general practice doctor and a nurse practitioner and they all only see women. When my IC started I had a lot of gynecological issues so I think I'd identify with a lot of the gyn stuff and bladder stuff.

I'm having a lot of anxiety about nursing. I get nervous with patients in clinicals and they can tell. This week we have to do a really detailed cardiovascular and peripheral vascular exam in clinicals (we already did it on our partner and I was nervous)...we have to touch some personal areas and I guess soon we're going to be giving baths also. I hate it. :(
