my urethra is always burning and spasming, it is filled with "lesions" and "scarring" according to the results from my surgeries in april. the tubes inside is covered in these red sores or lesions and it is scarred so that it is narrow and tight. what can i do for this??????? already use lidocaine and i CANNOT be cathed under ANYcircumstance I would let myself reach near death before allowing a cath. i will only allow being cathed if it is necessary to sdave my life, otherwise i will say no 100% of the time, cathing is my WORST NIGHTMARE AND WORST PAIN CAUSE. in fact, i think being held down and forcibly cathed is what caused the lesions and scars to begin withh, i was held down and cathed against my will at age 14.

Katie,
I think some people do get relief from urethral suppositories.... kind of like an instill, but in a viscous form so the medication stays in the urethra longer. My Uro was going to let me try them if I did not have good results with Elavil, but thankfully I did. I hope that will give you some relief! Please keep us posted on how you do.

unfortunately i have already tried the urethral suppositories and had the most unbelievably painful flare, the 2nd it was in my urethra started burning and it felt like hot razor blaze was in there. i do use lidocaine occasionally with some luck, sometimes it works sometimes it causes even worse burning pain.

I have only heard of the lidocaine suppository. What other urethral suppository is available? I would like to try it because I have IC and urethritis.
Thanks,
Kristi

Katie,
I am sorry the supossitories didn't work for you. What were they composed of?
Kristi,
I had read in Dr. Moldwin's book that he uses a very small catheter to inject lidocaine mixed with a steroid and an antibiotic into the urethra. According to his book these urethral instillations are carried out 2-3 times a week, and then tapered off as symptoms improved. I had given this info to my uro to see if I could try it before I started on Elavil, but the Elavil gave me so much improvement I haven't needed it.

Katie, I'm with you: I will never be cathed again unless it happens when I am unconscious. I used urethral suppositories (cortisone) and all they did was set me on fire.

Thanks Denysue. I tried Elavil but it didn't help me. I will ask my uro about this.

I so agree! When I had my cystoscopy it was one of the most painful things i've ever experienced. I literally sat up and started yelling when the doctor started the procedure and then was crippled in pain in the exam room afterwards. I don't know if he was used to IC patients or not because he seemed very suprised at the amount of pain it caused me. Either way i'm now terrified of ANYTHING going up my urethra! My urologist has mentioned doing instills but I really don't think i could handle it.

I am curious though, how do you know that you have scarring and lesions in your urethra?

i don't have quite the same problems that you do. but when i was first diagnosed i had constant urethra burning and burning when i peed. with in a week of taking dh aloe i had no pain when peeing :) the constant burning took much longer to heal, but the msm jel that worked for that.

i had laproscopic surgery after years of undiagnosed pain, they found IC with a lot of damage, scarring and stiffening of bladder and urethra was found to have lesions scarring and infmamation as well . I assume they looked at it with a camera and took pictures. I did see the bladder which was awful., i also saw pictures of the endo and adhesions which was nice to see with my own eyes. So your doctor can do a cysto w a camera and look at the urethra for damage, it is painful though . i was bedridden for almost a week bc the urethra was so irritated.
