I'm new here...just had the cysto/hydro done last Monday. I am still in pain. I was told to quit taking the peridium, but ok to still use the vicodin. Is this normal? I notice after the 4 hours is up that the cramps and pain come right back. I was on percocet, and wanted to switch to something not as strong.
I don't have the constant peeing problems, but much soreness down there, and much cramping. Thanks in advance for your advice!

hi
:hi: Welcome to the board
For some it can take a week or sometimes several weeks or more to completely recover from a hydro. It can be quite traumatic for the bladder.
Were you given an antibiotic to take for at least several days post hydro? I ask b/c it is not uncommon to develop a UTI after this procedure...and even if you were given a preventative antibiotic, the pain you are describing I think warrants dropping off a urine sample to your dr (uro, GP, gyn) to make sure you have not developed one...and if you have, antibiotics should be given. So probably best if you do that so that UTI can either be treated, or ruled out.
Well, I had an exceptionally long recovery from my hydro and my uro Rxd pyridium for me to take 3xday for at least a month. It really helped so I did not question! Tho pyridium is generally Rxd to be taken short term (like for no more than 3 days) usually that short term dose is what is usually Rxd for a UTI...and IC patients for the most part are not dealing with UTIs and many get much relief from taking pyridium as needed for IC symptom relief. Pyridium is availabile OTC in non Rx forms under the names Uristat and AZO Standard...Walgreens, Walmart, most any drugstore/pharmacy, and even most larger grocery stores sell it OTC. It is very affordable and yes the box will say take no more than 3xday for 3days. However, JMHO, taking it for a longer period of time...say for a week or two....if that is what is needed to relieve severe symptoms, I personally would have no problem taking it a few days or weeks longer than what is said on the box.
Also, sticking to a bland diet (see link to IC diet cheatsheet in my sig below), drinking plenty of water, heating pads and cold packs strategically placed, hot, warm, cold showers or baths (whichever gives you most relief), soaking in sitz bath filled with warm water, taking pain meds on schedule to keep you out of pain before it gets worse may help.
I've not tried Percocet, but Vicodin did not relieve my pain at all. It seems to working for your pain to some extent...so if that is the only pain med you have it is usually advised to use it as directed to stay ahead of the pain. And if you were getting relief from pyridium, then possibly trying one of the OTC versions would be of help to you.
Hope you feel better soon....recovery from this procedure can take a while for some so hang in there. Hopefully some of the other gals will have some more tips to help you thru this rough patch. Take care and keep us posted~

Sorry you are not feeling well. I haven't had a hydro in a few years, but am considering talking to my urologist at my appointment next month. Briza pretty much covered what I would have recommended. I hope you feel better soon!!!

Briza,
What did you do for pain during your month recovery?
I read that taking pyridium for longer than 3-4 days is dangerous because it can build up in your system.
I was given 10 cipro after the hydro to prevent a UTI.
I have always stuck to a bland diet, even before all of this started. I switched to just a half cup of coffee a day, and that's the special coffee I bought on this site. I'm having a terrible time giving up my diet coke tho. I try to sip on the same can almost all day long...used to drink maybe 3-4/day.
I just hate calling my dr back so many times! I have a followup scheduled in 4 weeks...should I asked to be seen sooner?
Thanks.
