My hubbys uncle is, I guess you could call him a naturalist. He knows just about everything there is to know about wild plants etc. He told my hubby about goldenseal, said it was also good for peptic ulcers and the like.

I have a herb book and it is listed as a med for IC, claiming to heal the ulcers and help rebuild the lining. But.....you have to instill it directly into your bladder. I would have no problem putting rx's in there, but I don't know about plants. Also how would it and the other meds react?

IF anyone knows or has an idea aboaut who I could contact please let me know.

Hi Karisa,
Your uncle is right. Goldenseal is a miracle treatment. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a bottle of Yeast Gard at the pharmacy. This contains goldenseal and is marketed as a preventive and treatment for yeast infections. My improvement from my IC symptoms is DRAMATIC. I suggest you give it a try. I too have tried Elmiron, Macrobid, Amytrp, Neurontin, etc.
with no relief from my 17 years of suffering. I cannot believe that eight dollars has changed my life. I started by taking two a day for the first few days and I now take 1 a day. I am almost totally symptom free. I know you may find this hard to believe, But it is true. I haven't even shared this with anyone as I want to wait and be sure. Within a few days, I started to realize that somethingh was different. Give it try and I wish you the best. It is so hard to keep a positive attitude when you suffer with ic.

Please do not put anything directly into your bladder without first discussing it with your physician.

Hi Donna,
This is not instilled in the bladder. The Yeast Gard product that I am using is a capsule. Yeast Gard does market other products under the same label. Thanks

It was ckam who suggested instilling it.

My herbal teacher claimed he cures some patients with high doses of goldenseal (up to 20 capsules a day for several weeks)but I would never try this unless working with an experienced herbalist who gets high quality herbs and has experience with that high a dose. For some reason he did not feel it would cure me even though when I take goldenseal at a smaller dose it does not seem to bother me. I've often wondered myself about using something like goldenseal in conjunction with marshmallow in the bladder but I'm too scared to try myself. Not sure if any herbalist has done anything like this and I'm sure doctors wouldn't have a clue as to the effect. That's the problem. My guess is that weak solutions would not be any worse than the other toxins like alcohol that one time I got in a drug trial and it hurt like hell. But again I would not go it alone.

I am willing to give almost anything a shot as IC rules my life. I am crossing my fingers I can find this, and perhaps it will help even a little. :smile tee

I tried Goldenseal capsules when I first got IC. I was getting better, but I was also doing a lot of other natural treatments, like a vegan diet and some other supplements, so I'm not really sure what was helping.
Then I moved and went off all that, and it got worse again. I am currently back on a strict diet, taking Chinese herbs, and just ordered some DH aloe vera.
Maybe I'll try the Goldenseal again too.
Whatever works....

It is called Yeast Gard Homeopathic Formula Capsules. It was around $8 and some change. We shall see, who know's...perhaps this could be my miracle or help a little atleast. I will never give up hope and living a pain free life again. I will never give up!

I'm sure there is lots of info on goldenseal that you could all find. For the most part it is not used as a long term herb - "cold" bitter strong acting herbs are used in the short term verses nutritive supportive herbs. Also good quality goldenseal is expensive. Alternative herb is oregon grape which also contains berberine (there are a few others, too) An herbalist might prescrible goldenseal for a short time. I would seek out a naturopath or an herbalist to see what their ideas of using it longer term at low dose is. Like anything else there could be side effects. I would be interested to hear if it really is helping IC - that points to infection or its alkalizing effect. It is considered tonic for mucus membranes. Research berberine, though goldenseal does have other constituents. That is the difference between herbs and drugs. Herbs are much more complicated. If you want to look for an herbalist you could start with the American Herbalist Guild or find a trained Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor or acupuncturist.

I see I'm answering an old post but goldenseal made my IC worse. It grows wild in the mountains & the older generations used it for everything. I've used it for tea. It is a very strong herb or maybe I made the tea too strong. I know it is a natural antibiotic.
