I joined this network on July 27,2009 eight days ago, I was sad, desperate and hysterical to say the least. While talking to my wonderful boss about my condition, she told me that her sister also suffered from IC. She mentioned to me that her sister was a member to an on-line support network, that information changed my life. I found this network and the first thing that I read was the IC diet. I eliminated pop, coffee with equal, chocolate and tea. I started to feel better right away. When I woke up on Saturday it was like a miracle, I did not feel my bladder. The cramping painful feeling that I had been living with for the last four months was gone. I wish my doctor would have mentioned this diet to me. So I am a grateful soul who has found guidance on this network. I am still suffering from severe back pain but I have an appointment to see neurologist next week. Thank you!!!!

Equal seems to me to be one of the most potent bladder toxins EVER.
I first began to suspect I had IC when, long ago, I had to take a long course of antibiotics for a sinus infection that would not clear.
I didn't want to get a yeast infection, so I ate no sugar.
I instead lived on yogurt with equal.
Very soon I got raging bladder pain that only subsided when I removed the equal. Very not recommended!
So glad you found us!

I am very glad that you are feeling better!
The diet does make a big difference.
I am on antibiotics for a sinus infection and "cheated" on my diet recently so my bladder is not... very happy to say the least.
I have a question, though. What is equal?

Equal is an artificial sweetener containing aspartame.

Isn't it awful that doctors often do not mention the IC diet? Mine didn't either. I even asked him about some supplements I read about on this site and he said he can not endorse anything besides medication because it has not been "studied." No mention of diet, physical therapy. Doctors often want to just throw meds at a problem, when total health often needs a holistic approach. So glad you are doing better! Hang in there.

When I was diagnosed and put on Elmiron,my GYN gave me a little kit that had a small booklet about Elmiron and a colorful list of foods to avoid and those that were safe. Not quite as detailed as the IC Diet we find on this site but a barebones list to start out with. My GYN also told me to go online to see what info I could find and this is the best site for that. He has been very open to info I find here and has gone along with me when I wanted to try something I read about on here. I have been able to add foods back in with no problems.Only 3 things so far don't agree with me that I have tried,Cantelope,Strawberries and Luzzianne Decaf tea. Decaf coffee is fine, one cup a day.

Sounds as though you are very lucky to find such a great doctor and very lucky to be able to eat so many foods! :)
