Rick's son who will turn 21 in a few days had his dog hit by a truck last night. She was around a year old, a hunting type dog. She was very strong and kept breaking her chains and getting out of where he had her kenneled.

She like many country dogs likes to chase cars. Well this is what happened. She had broke her chain again and chased a truck. She would run after them, well this one was pulling a hay trailer and that is what got her.

She was alive but laying in the road. Someone came by and told him so his girlfriend called a vet and they took her there. Long story short, she was blowing blood out her nose and gasping to breath and did have a leg hurt.

However this vet didn't even take her into the office to check her out. He found out that it was a dog given to him and called him a stray. Dillon had had her for 9 months. The vet told him he would put her to sleep for free. Dillon asked him if he could see if she could make it and he said I didn't say I would do that. He also told him you could have just shot her and no dog is going to suffer on my watch.

Dillon told him to go ahead then and put her to sleep. He pulled a syringe out of his pocket and right in the parking lot in front of Dillons 2 year old who loved his dog, put the dog to sleep.

Now I understand that most likely that is what the outcome would have been but you don't make those types of remarks to someone who is upset about their dog and just doing it out in the parking lot seems a little callous to me, especially in front of a child.

How sad! I agree, this was in very bad form. Some people just boggle the mind!

How is Dillon's son? Hopefully he is young enough to not understand what happened there.

I would consider that unethical and it's my humble opinion that a formal complaint should be filed with the licensing agency for your state.

Such things should never, ever, happen.

:cussing:People like that make me angry.. If he has NO compassion he needs to get out of that Business..My pets are a part of my family and no vet better ever act like that when it comes to one of them..grr

That is just really in bad form to say and do -specially in front of a small child. i also hope that they file a complaint against the Vet. He has really no business treating animals with the attitude that he has.

I am really really sorry.:(
Every vet should know that animals can't speak for themselves and because of that then their owners and their vets must speak for them.
And if this beloved dog could have spoken, I am sure he would've said, please don't cause my family more pain than they are already in.
What a shame. Breaks my heart for Dillon and esp his son.

I agree that a complaint should be made against this vet. (I used small case because he does not deserve the upper case.)

I think that Cody will be ok, he is young. Dillon said that Dude, the dog, was trying to walk even with the hurt leg. Got out of the car all by herself in that parking lot and all.

I will mention to Dillon that maybe a complaint should be filed and see what he wants to do with it. Come to find out this was a large animal hospital that
usually deals with farm animals. The way I look at that though is that if they didn't want to deal with it they should have said so. There were at least 2 other vets in the town.

Thanks everyone I just wanted to make sure my emotions weren't clouding my thinking on this.

I find it very strange that the vet just happened to have a syringe in his pocket to put the dog to sleep. Doubt there are many vets that carry them in their pockets. At least, I hope not.

OMG! I think I would file a complaint to animal rights, maybe the pup could have been saved. This is not an animal lover he has no right to be a vet. He wouldn't even allow him to be brought in his office. hoow crude. (((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))

I agree with everyone. File complaint.

Actually most vets carry needed meds regularly. Sometimes the most humane way to love an animal is to put it down --- and the vet needs to be prepared. Our vet, who is also a friend, told me this is the most difficult part of his practice, but one he feels he must do because he does love animals.

I'm sorry that happened and I hate to say it but all vets are the same. Just some won't say what they think. Long ago had a dog that needed to be putto sleep. I didn't go along and at first he was left there to be checked out. Long story short the person brought him back in a garbage bag! To this day it still upsets me and it's been over 10 years. I feel like I let him down. It's never easy having to let go of a pet. Exspecially when it's sudden and the pet is so young. Maybe the dog could have survived if taken to another vet but one never knows. No animal should be shot when they can be "nicely" put to sleep with a needle. Yes, they shot them in the old days but should not be done now. I just hope the little boy will forget it happened.
