I'm not sure where this fits in, so I thought I'd try the off topic section.
I have trouble with my hips hurting. Now that I'm seven months pregnant, they are bothering me even more. Our mattress is crummy, but we can't afford a new one right now. We are looking into getting a foam topper for the mattress. I was wondering if anyone else has gotten one of these and if you have any suggestions? I've found a few on J.C. Penney's Web site that sound good. We are looking to spend no more than $75. I don't want to waste money on something if it's not going to work well. Any suggestions?

If there's an upholstery supply store near you, you might want to consider purchasing some high density foam from them. You can take the measurements and they will cut it for you. It would be "bare" foam, but with a mattress cover and sheets, it should do well for you. It may make your mattress too thick for ordinary fitted sheets, but I found a trick to make them work. I bought some 1" wide elastic and stitched a piece of it about six inches from each corner (at the head of the bed) of a fitted sheet, then stretched the elastic and stitched it to the foot end of the sheet so when I put the fitted sheet on the bed, the elastic goes under the mattress and keeps the sheet from working its way off the mattress. Or you could buy some deep pocket sheets.

What a great idea, Donna! My husband is the more crafty one of us. I can't even sew on buttons, but he's great at it! I am going to run this by him. It's definitely worth checking into.
Thanks so much!

we have a memory foam mattress and LOVE it but it is a bit of an investment! some foam like donna mentioned might work, but the typical memory foam mattress toppers aren't really that helpful. if you can pinch your thumb and finger together and they almost touch, you can imagine that there really is no support for your body. i'm sorry your hip is bothering you!!! a bittersweet joy of pregnancy! i did find that i ten dollar body pillow from walmart helped my hips. i just folded it in half and slept with it between my legs/knees. i hope that you find some relief...falling has happened to me and it's not good!!! let us know!

An actual mattress would be nice. We're hoping the topper can last us for about a year. Right now we're hesitant to spend much money because of the baby and needing to get stuff for her. In the background of it all, we are still rebuilding and paying off a bit of debt after my husband was off work for a year.
I bought a mattress topper at a department store yesterday, but it was only an inch thick. I'm going to take it back today. I ended up ordering one online that is 3 inches thick. It was on sale and I had an online coupon code for Penney's (where I got it), so it was only $77 with tax and shipping. We'll see how it works. My dad is insistent that it won't help. They have offered to just buy us a new mattress for an early Christmas gift, but I'm not sure. That's an awfully big expense for a gift.

We have an old firm guest mattress. Even though it was old, it had very little use so we didn't want to replace it. We did want to make it a bit more comfortable, however. What we did was to place a layer of "egg crate" regular foam topper on it and then put a 3" memory foam topper on top of that. Oh my gosh! What a difference it made....so very comfortable!
Several months ago we bought a brand new mattress for ourselves. It turned out to be horrible, but was under warranty. Just before we moved we got the store where we bought it to confirm the new mattress was defective. It had 2 huge sink holes in it ------- obvious manufacturer's defect. There wasn't time to replace it before we moved so the store took it back and sent us a check instead of a replacement mattress.
We weren't planning on moving that old guest mattress but, when a replacement couldn't be obtained before the move, we changed our minds and moved the old guest mattress with it's foam toppers to use until we could get a new mattress set.
We just got our new mattress. We splurged and bought a latex mattress set (cooler than memory foam, but very supportive and conforming to the body). We're still adjusting to it, but like it so far. That old guest mattress with the egg crate foam and 3" memory foam toppers saved the day for us. It was very comfortable to sleep on and we didn't have to rush to purchase our new one since we could sleep comfortably on the old one. We have decided we are keeping that old set as our guest bed and we don't need to replace it.
I'm not pregnant (over 60 --- so not a chance! :lmao:) so I can't comment on mattress comfort in connection with pregnancy. But I do have some arthritis and my husband has had 2 very serious back surgeries and still lives with back pain. We both were very comfortable sleeping on those foam toppers! You are fortunate you have the option of choosing between a topper and a new mattress.

Thanks, Annie. We are going to try out the topper first. It actually arrived yesterday. Right now, it's been unfolded and is airing out. We'll get it put on before bed tonight. I can't wait to try it!

The foam topper rocks! It is so incredibly comfortable. My hips still hurt a bit, but not nearly like they were. This is much more manageable. Even my husband is happy with how comfortable it feels. We went with the three-inch one and that seems to work well for us. I just want to stay in bed all day! :)
