We got a new puppy yesterday! A two and a half month old shepard mix named Harley. He's a really mellow little guy who LOVES being outside. We already have two little dogs, a chiuaua and a pug, and we wanted something bigger for my two boys to play with. Harley is already bigger than both of my full grown dogs. Everyone is getting along just great. And it's something for me to focus on other than my IC. Just wanted to share.

Congratulations! Puppies and kittens are a real gift. It's great the way they take us outside ourselves.

Puppies are so much fun to have around! I'm glad the furry kids are all getting along together.

Puppies are great! My husband is trying to get me to agree to getting one...however I will be the one to house-train her; and I don't have the time. I told him I'm willing to get a kitten (easy to train-all you have to do is show them the "box" besides everyone says I need one since we have an occassional visitors (mices). Of course, I tell these people that with my luck the cat will bring it to me!

I love Dogs! Especially puppies. We have 2 pugs. Daisy Grace who is 2 and Ada May who just turned one and my brother who lives with us has a rot, Angel who's 7.

Good luck with training. And you are right they do give me so much comfort!

Hugs and blessings,

That's sweet, Angel. I'm sure your boys are thrilled! And lucky pup Harley is to have other dogs and a couple of boys to play with!! My dog loves when my friend's son comes over to walk her, guess I should say RUN her...they have a blast! I can't keep up! :)

Ah, thats sweet. pets can be the best thing when you are not feeling well. I have a mini Schnauzer named "Opie" he has been my baby when I have been down from being sick and when I was going through a bad time in my life. Two weeks ago we got a new kitten.:cat: Ah we call her the DEVIL KITTY. She is so funny her and Opie are best of friends already. Then last week some body dumped a 10 month old cat at our house. So we now have two new babies. Good luck with the new puppy.:)

Sounds like you need a cat...yeah they might bring you a prize catch now and then :) but better than that they make great heating pads!
Female cats are usually much better mousers than males...

Female cat is a better hunter than the male. And they are more lovable. My one year old cat follows me around in the yard when I'm working in my flower gardens. And they seem to know when you are having a bad day. I would rather have a dog. You can train a puppy to a kennel. its much safer and they seem to like them when its bed time and nap time. But if you get one I would do it while its still warm outside. That way you wont get cold trying to housebreak them. Men always say they want a puppy but, we are the ones that have to do all the work haha:bonk: Diamic65:angel:

Thanks- Now I have to do is talk my husband into a cat! Either way, it is going to be female- this way there will be the same number as guys/girls in the house. (I have 3 males-humans; 1 female dog and myself-so see, we are outnumbered still). The dog that we have is about 4 years old, we rescued her from a friend as she was going to give it back to the shelter-and I couldn't see doing that. She is part Jack Russell Terrier/Wippet and her name is Emzy.

I want to knock on wood but it might be too soon, we set out some traps and were able to catch 2 mices(mouses)? I still think there is another one as these 2 were small grey ones the other one that I seen was black and a little bigger--(of course, when I saw it it was at 2:00 in the morning and I was sitting on the toilet and it came running around the toilet! I started to scream but the only one that heard me was my dog. We were going to call an exterminator but they were going to charge $65 at a pop and they said they would come out between 3 to 6 times....but one of the places told me if we are not screamish(?) that we can set the traps and do it ourselves and save some money-I also ordered one of these things that you plug in and they are suppose to keep your house pest free. I got it in the mail last night so I am going to plug it in tonight and see if it really works.

I know what you are talking about. If I scream the only one that hears me is My Schnauzer (Opie). My husband dose not hear me.. at least thats what he says??? If you do get a cat make sure its a female. We have a brown mouse thats on the porch and i'm afraid it will make its way into the house. My three month old kitten is to small to catch it. My one year old cat is still afraid of the dog. She was dumped two weeks ago and she would not be able to come into the house and catch the mouse if it made its way into the house. Hopefully she will catch it before then. Keep me updated if you get a kitty. Good luck with the light.:smile tee

We cage trained out puppy now 3 years old. First time we ever tried that but it worked perfect. Kept him in there and took him out every hour & praised him greatly when he did his business. After the first night of crying like crazy (we left him in the cage away from us) He figured it was not worth the fuss so then we took him into our room and no crying. I get up early and took him out. Next wee-wee pads and we starting moving them to the door. So he got it. Once the pad was on the other side and out. Just sending to help others who are just getting their first puppy. We love him with a passion. Hugs, Ziggy

My 15 1/2 year old male Staffy/kelpie died 2 1/2 years ago. I still miss him so much, all his funny antics. I think he kept me sane when I was home alone being sick with this IC. He seemed to know when I was unwell and would`nt leave my side, would look at me with sorrowful eyes, which would say, "I Know". What a wonderful companion, he didnt answer back, did what he was told, and all he asked was for me to be there for him. (feed him as well). No more animals for me as I want to travel, but I recommend a pet for companionship and lots of laughs. Yvon

Oh, I'm sorry you lost your best friend. I have my Opie he is a Mini Schnauzer. He is 9 yrs old. He knows when I'm sick or having a bad day. He loves my husband too but, he is a mommy's boy. I hate to think about when he leaves me. it makes me cry. I don't know what I will do.:smile tee

[QUOTE=Diamic65;499061]Oh, I'm
Yep, I was devastated when Rebel went, I can remember all the funny things agout him. he liked to jump the fence and roam, would size the height up, take about 6 goes at it, and then finally charge, run up the fence and was away. the next door neighbours used to bring their visitors to watch him. He used to dive into the swimming pool, was not allowed but always scaled the fence. we had to teach him to climb the ladder out, so he wouldnt drown if we were not at home. anyway. I mind my daughters dog when they are in town, so thats enuff. best wishes Yvonne :smile tee

When I held my little guy of 19 years (Chihuahua) Joey while the Vet put him down I said I would NEVER get another dog. Five years later we got another Chihuahua but this one is much bigger. Stormy is the first dog my Husband ever has had. I had just come down with IC and could not be the (Mother) to him as I was to Joey. My Husband took over and did most of the work. They bonded to the max. What joy I get from watching those two fools run all over the place playing! My Husband is an old Military man. Rarely shows strong emotion. It's so strange & funny to see him pick up Stormy and kiss him good morning. So worth every worry I had about getting another pet. We are retired and stay close to home. Should I be a person who travels a lot I would have not even thought about another pet. Too much to worry about. Joey use to go to work with me. We grew old together. One can only imagine the pain of putting him down but the memories of him will remain with me always. Good memories. Hug, Ziggy

How r u? I do love dogs, but travelling in a caravan, its not always possible to stay in dog friendly places, My daughterused to mind my dog, but she is living 3OO klms away now, so nobody to mind pets for me. My husband is not an animal lover. he likes them, as long as he dosnt have to do any work involved, so guess who does it all. me.!! our home is 2 stories, so the dog stays in downstairs backyard by itself, my last dog was always inside, but bought the red mud with him, and the ticks, our area is infested with them, nothing to see ticks as big as thumbnails crawling around the house, so, no more pets sadly. I will just mind my daughters when she comes into town for a visit. I am glad you are enjoying your pet and hubby too. You have your hubby trained well, I cant train mine. Yvonne

Well my husband has just left for a meeting for work and will be gone for couple of days. I have a UTI and its really bad. So my little Opie will by my baby while my husband is away. He knows when mommy is not feeling well. So we get to lye around and watch some golf and movies. :cat: I have a four month old kitten and a ten month old cat. The older cat dose not like Opie but the kitten dose. So they get to play while daddy is not home.Having pets really helps when your not feeling well.

You are right. Pets are wonderful. Our two labs are the joy of our lives. I had my little precious baby girl white lab spayed on Thursday. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but it has been a huge deal. We picked her up at the vet's office on Fri. morning, and everything seemed fine. On Sat. she kept licking her incision site, and then Sat. afternoon, I noticed a bloody discharge. Of course, the vet's office closed at noon and doesn't reopen until tomorrow morning. So, I took her to the emergency vet clinic. The vet there checked her incision, cleaned it up, started her on antibiotics, and put an E collar on her. She hates it. Well, the incision is still bleeding today, not a whole lot, but any at all is too much. I can hardly wait until my vet's office opens tomorrow morning so I can get her in there. Other than that, she is doing fine..eating drinking, has plenty, (way too much:puppy:) energy. I am very upset about this, everytime I look at her pitiful little face surrounded by that huge collar, I just cry.

[QUOTE=:angel:QUOTE]sorry you are not feeling so well at the moment. and without your hubby there it can get a bit miserable. I know Opie will be company for you. My dog always knew when I was ill. He would look at me with sorrowful eyes, follow me around, never left my side. They must have an extra sense, as sometimes he knew I was coming down unwell before I did. get better quick. Yvon xx

Asilva:hi: I hope your baby is doing better. I hate it when my dog gets sick. He has a lot of health problems. But he he stills acts like a puppy at times. He's a MINI Schnauzer. Please let me know how she is doing. I will be thinking about her. And you as well:pray: DIAMIC65:smile tee

Yeah, the E collar is really stressful for them, huh? And stressful to watch, I know, because it disorients them so much when they bang into things with it
Is it a clear plastic one? If so, one thing I've found that helped at least a bit was to put duct, electrical, or masking tape around the edge of the collar so my dogs could see the taped edge rather than NOT seeing just the clear plastic and that helped them in being able to negotiate things, not running into things as much.
I've also trimmed the seemingly huge E collar down a bit with scissors so that that it does not extend so much, b/c I have found (w/ my dogs at least) that the E collar did not need to have such wide diameter nor to extend SO far past the tip of the nose to still be effective in keeping them from licking/chewing on stitches.
Sounds like she hasn't chewed the stitches out? So even if she is bleeding some if she still has the stitches in that is really good. Because if stitches have been chewed out completely, and too much time has passed, then my experience has been the stitches can't be replaced and then you REALLY have to watch them and keep them calm so that they don't have a hernia.

When I had my most recent dog spayed was the first time that I, or rather I should say any of my dogs lol, were given a pain med to take for a few days post surgery....and it REALLY helped. I expressed my concern about her chewing the stitches out (which previous dogs/cats of mine had almost always done. E collar or not) and having much concern b/c I was not able to take off work (nor stay up all night) to watch over her to make sure she didn't chew them out or wiggle her way out of E collar....the new vet said well, they usually lick and chew because of the pain (obviously??? duh?? who wouldn't be in at least some discomfort if not severe PAIN after such a surgery?:bonk:)) and the vet rxd a few doses of Rimadyl (an NSAID most commonly used for arthritis pain in dogs)... actually I still had some left over that I used with much success for many years to treat my old dog's arthritis pain so vet told me how to break up the tabs in approriate smaller doses for my new pup's post op pain, and it was the first and only time in my dog-owning entire life that my dog did not chew or lick on her stitches...worked so well that I could at least remove the E collar while I was at home and awake to watch over her and did not have to try at all to stop her from licking or chewing, b/c she just didn't, tho I still put the trimmed down edge taped e collar on when I went to bed and to work. Worked out really well and was of much relief to me, and of course for my pup...since it meant less stress time in the E collar and apparently relieved her pain and irritation a lot.
So when I had my male dog neutered, I again asked for a few doses of Rimadyl from the vet... and it gave him same good results with it helping to relieve the post op pain and therefore the licking and chewing on his incision pretty much a non-issue.

Sorry for the ramble lol...anyway, hope any of this is of some help and hope your pup gets to feeling better soon. Dogs are remarkable in how quickly they heal, and how little they complain, even while in a lot of pain...hope all is back to normal really soon!:)
