One of my favorite parts of summer!
Walked down to the summer farmers market today:) I could post this in the Happiness Corner too because it was such a nice morning, but since it's about food, here it is...

I bought: fresh green beans, zucchini & summer squash, white corn, new red potatoes, a sweet potato, fresh baked wheat bread, a tiny loaf of zucchini bread, and a pint of blackberries. (The blackberries are an experiment.)

I don't know why it feels so much nicer to buy the veggies in the farmers market since I buy the same stuff I buy in the store. Maybe it's the whole feeling normal thing, walking around in the sunlight, chatting with the vendors. And the smell of the Coppertone I doused myself with before going outside - that smell is pure summer!

Came home & made lunch:
Scrambled eggs (1 whole egg, 2 whites) with broccoli, red bell pepper, mushrooms, 3 T of mozzarella cheese.
2 hot corn tortillas
Nonfat milk
5 blackberries sprinkled with sugar (And 6 Prelief tablets! I hope my IC behaves well with them. I'm sooo tired of pears & dates!)

Now signing off for a nap. See you later!

I love Farmers Markets, I just don't usually get the time to go to them. I have a garden planted and get excited everytime something get ripe. There is nothing like fresh produce!

There's a large farmer's market here that I especially enjoy. It's got not only a ton of produce, but people preparing all kinds of yummy foods (some are even IC friendly!) and people selling crafts, jewelry, etc.

Has anyone here seen "Food, Inc." It's a documentary about the food industry. While I wouldn't call it entertaining, it's a real eye-opener.

After I saw it I really wished I could avoid the supermarket altogether. The farmer's market's produce is better for you, better for our communities, the environment, etc. Apparently a lot of supermarket produce hardly has any nutritional value. And it's nice to be able to be face to face with the grower of your food.

There's some here in Austin, but by the time I get up and go even early in the mornings alot of its picked over ( I live outside of town). However, when we did live in town I would go every Saturday or so. Oh well.

There are several around here, but I have yet to get to one. The only time I think about it is when I'm at work, or have no car. go-figgure ;)

I've heard that acid free or low acid tomatoes are ok with ic --- any comments?

Low acid tomatoes? Some IC patients are ok with them, some not. If you want to try it, have a very small serving the first time in case your bladder reacts....

I've noticed that a couple of farmers' markets near me are now labeling low-acid stone fruits. So far I've seen nectarines and peaches so designated. For those who are wanting to try summer fruits that might be a good place to start. I've never seen labeling like that at the big stores.

Going back to the farmers' market this season has been inspirational. I was afraid that I might get depressed about all the beautiful stuff I no longer can eat, but instead it's been great. I forgot just how many fantastic vegetables there are that are IC friendly. Fresh fingerling potatoes are like a whole new universe. I'm buying spring onions (pricey but so good!) and grilling them til they melt.
