View Full Version : Opinions on 2nd Hydrodistention

I have been researching like mad recently, and I have decided to ask my doctor about getting a 2nd hydrodistention. I just started taking Elmiron about a month ago, and meds like Elavil don't work for the constant pain I have. So I am thinking that this is my best option at this point.

Does anyone know how likely it is for the 2nd one to help with the pain, if the first didn't? It did allow the doctors to officially diagnose me with IC, but it did not help the pain at all. The DMSO instilation left me in pain for days afterwards, and I am tired of treating the breakthrough pain with narcotics and meds like Prosed. I am tired of walking on eggchells around my stupid bladder. Even a slight decrease in the pain would be wonderful!

SO has anyone had luck with a 2nd? Please give me your opinions on this, because I am really on my last rope here. My doc has already suggested it, but I was weary of another surgery, that may or may not make any difference.

One last question, when I had my first cysto/hydro done, I was in excrutiating pain for about 2 weeks afterwards. They took a biopsy out of one of the ulcer like areas. Is that normal to do a biopsy?

Any imput or advice would be truly appriciated. Hope everyone a bladder-pain-free day!

Hydrodistentions definitely help me. Even the first one did.

My main concern is that it will be a waste, since I didn't get any relief from the first one. Hopefully the second will help, because it is very encouraging to learn that other women were helped by them. My doctor has also discussed a TENS unit with me, but I am still researching that one.

One of my main treatments are hydros- for the most part they work, every so many for some odd reason they don't and it leaves me in more pain then before I went in and had one.

Hi, It's hard to say if another distention would help your pain. I use to have great success with distentions. It's very common to feel worse pain for a couple weeks right after the distention, but that's because the bladder is irritated from the procedure. I had my last distention done in November of 2008. I was looking forward to the help I usually get from the procedure, but this time the Doctor found multiple hunners ulcers and couldn't distend my bladder very much due to excessive bleeding from the ulcers. Is there anything else you've tried like elmiron? I would be reluctant to have another distention done if you had no relief at all from your first one, but of course that's up to you and your Doctor. I wish you luck and success. Sufferingbad

It is good they did a cysto the first time. Can rule out cancer. I see no reason for another cysto with the next HYDRO. I asked my Doctor to use only saline and that is all he used and I felt better within days. WE are all so different. I sure Pray if you go ahead with another HYDRO you find it more helpful. Please keep us posted. Hugs, Ziggy

I go to talk to my doc today, but hopefully since they wouldn't have to do another cysto (which is the part that REALLY hurt afterwards) there won't be as long of a recovery period, and I might see results from the hydro. After my first one, the thing that I noticed most was how much it hurt to void, but I found out that was because of the biopsies they took off the ulcers.

My doctor has mentioned having a second one done, because at this point it can't be worse than how I feel now. I am also going to discuss the other installations that there are, in office or at home. I just hope I can handle it. I used to have to be medicated before my DMSO treatments because I would have panic attacks and make it hurt a lot worse by tightening up.

Thank you everyone for your opinions, and I really look forward to seeing my doctor today because since I joined this forum, I have so many ideas I want to discuss with him. It really has been a great source of comfort and information.
Thanks everyone!

Hello WildBerndt :) I was going thru your dillemma a few months ago. With all of the feedback from my fellow ICers I finally had another hydrodistention w/biopsy. I prepared myself this time for the procedure knowing how painful it was last time I awoke from the anethesia.
It went surprisingly well and when I woke up this time my pain was minimal. I am very happy with the results because my frequency has gone way down and my pain level has decreased. I do have days here and there, but all and all I am happy that I had a second procedure. Everyone is different and whatever you choose I hope you are feeling better soon. Think Positive! :smile tee

I too have been wondering about getting a second hydrodistension. The first one helped TREMENDOUSLY and I am seriously considering asking for a second one.
