I went through a lot of mental gymnastics to become open to trying an anti-depressant for a number of reasons but finally started on Lexapro this a.m. I was really feeling good about it. It made me terribly nervous and anxious the first two hours but I knew I could adjust to that but at 2 hours it went the way of 99% of the oral drugs I try do. Once it hit my bladder it felt like acid for the next 6 hours. I just don't get it. It doesn't matter what oral drug I take except tylenol, motrin and a few OTCs, Cipro, and ketonidazole. I have taken literally 100's of oral meds. over 10 years and just can't tolerate when they pass through. I've only met two other IC patients with this problem. What a downer. I just wonder what the exact etiology is. I was encouraged to read that Teri thought Medtronics might have new options for pain in the next few years though. That made my night.

Dianne, Don't give up on antidepressants, ask the doc to try something else & ask for samples to see if it's OK with the bladder instead of spending money on a script that doesn't work.

Dianne,
I am the same way with medicines . I hope you can find something that works for you. I had to start doing what Kathi suggested and asking my doctors for samples first. The hundreds of prescriptions were costing me too much. Best wishes

Thank you. I figured that out too. This was a 2-week sample. I'm grateful since it's a new drug, I know it would have cost plenty and so often one pill is all I get to take, so I'm glad this was a sample.

Dixie: As my husband tells me about my having to take Lexapro and I try to go off (and become a total *****)..."If I was insulin dependent diabetic, I wouldn't stop taking it just because I felt fine." I am impossible with out an anti depressant especailly since I started having IC symptoms. I was taking a very small dose, but was told by 3 different docs, and my chiro, I really needed to go up, due to my depression and pain. I increased it by 10 mgs just today and am totally wired. I have been "blabber chopping" non stop all day with everyone. I don't know if I can sleep tonight. (Might be a good thing..I have to stay up tonight with a kitty who just had surgery, again, on a bad leg..He's incredibly disoriented and drugged. I have to give him pain meds every 6 hours. Nutin like a little opiate based drug for kitty too!) I'll have to take them in the mornings. I sure understand why you want to cut down the med count. It sucks...I feel like a 90 year old altzheimer patient with my daily med count, and my pill sorter. (Ah..the weekly refill of pills, and vitamins..what a routine)
Dianne: this is probl a very dumb questions but have you tried pre relief before pills. Lexapro is such a good anti depressant because it is so concentrated you only need a little to get you by, hence, less overall that you have to take. (Like, when I took Effexor, I got up to 150mgs./day and was SOO sick when I went off it. It took months...seriously, for me get off that stuff.
Bye bye...

Yes, thank you, I've tried everything I know of to try. I've been through everything on this site in the patient handbook category except BCG which my uro is against and I'm not interested in. Haven't done interstim because it isn't for pain although I do percutaneous nerve stim weekly. (SANS unit). I'm pretty much just a pain patient until something new comes out.
