View Full Version : how prelief works?
I have a very basic question about how prelief works. What does it mean that prelief binds to the acid. Without getting too scientific, how exactly does it work? And, how is this calcium different than other calciums? Thank you.

Dear Hope and Ruth:
Prelief is composed of calcium + glycerophosphate, bound together in such a fashion that the moment they are in your body, they break into those two parts. The glycerophosphate is free to neutralize (or bind) acids, while the calcium is fully available to you within seconds.
Not everybody realizes that when compared to the calcium in Prelief, other calcium supplements give up their calcium reluctantly and do so only under very acidic conditions. Thus, these other calcium supplements, by neutralizing acid actually work against their own calcium release! There is scientific evidence from work done at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy by Dr. Ralph Shangraw that shows many calcium supplements don't even properly dissolve by the time they pass through the body. Furthermore, the amount of this reluctant calcium that becomes available is presented only as bare calcium and cannot achieve optimum utilization by the body. The human body requires calcium in a 1:1 ratio with phosphate, just like it is presented to you in milk (and in Prelief!). Prelief's calcium glycerophosphate gives the body exactly what it needs – the desired ratio of calcium together with that essential phosphate (in the glycerophosphate).
Hope this is helpful....

Thanks Betty I really did not understand how and why it works. My mom had bought me some back in December and I have never used it? I was afraid. I really appreciate the info.
Ruth :hi:

Dear Valli:
Any pharmacy can Special Order Prelief for you including WalMart, CVS, and the others that you mentioned.
Every Walgreens should have Prelief on the shelf with the antacids. If it is not there, you cannot ask the pharmacist; you need to get the Store Manager. He is the person who stocks and orders the over-the-counter products and will locate it for you. If you would provide the address and telephone number of the Walgreens store, I will contact them.

Can I get Prelief in Canada?

I LOVE Prelief! I learned about it on this site more than a year ago. Because I'm on the Elmiron, I occasionally will take the risk of a cup of coffee, or a glass of wine, or a dish of spaghetti, with Prelief first. I've never had anything bother me if I take the Prelief first.
I've only ever been able to find it at Walgreen's.
My mother-in-law and my stepdaughter both have sensitive stomachs, and I have introduced them both to Prelief. They are very grateful! And I'm glad to know now that we're all getting the calcium we need, delivered in the best possible way.

Dear Curlyfries:
Prelief is not available in stores in Canada. You can order online at www.prelief.com, but shipping is costly. There is a pharmacist from the states who may be able to assist you. I suggest you contact Lou at Pure Nature in Windsor, Ontario at 519-972-8696.

If I take it too early in a meal it will give me the "runs" - really bad! I wait until I'm almost done eating before taking them but I wonder how effective they are taken late in the meal...

Does Tums work just as well as Prelief? I am going to have just one slice of pizza tonight and I took a few tums first. Has anyone ever tried this? I figured since it neutralizes acid it might work. Thanks!

My urologist actually told me to use Prelief. I had used it in the past, but had forgotten how helpful it was till I got this last never-ending flare.

Muffie,
I don't know whether Tums will help prevent a pizza flare or not (did it?), but what got me using Prelief regularly is the knowledge that I plan to live a long time, I'm obviously going to need this bladder for a long time, and anything I can do to protect it, I'd better! So if Prelief is made specifically to protect the urinary tract, that's what I'm going to USE!
Hope you're doing well.

Wolfe.......... How did they diagnose you with Fibro! I am glad that you are thinking of living a long life with IC and all these extra illnesses. I was really depressed when I found out I had IC cuz for me I am 36 yrs old that was not my plan to live with a chronic illness. I have had it for 11 years and I still cant accepted, but I do what I have to do make me feel some what better.

My Fibro was diagnosed about 3 months before the IC. Quite a year!
I had crashed big-time, and they told me I had chronic fatigue. This was before I had Internet, so I was in the library, reading medical journals and magazines.
I told my doc I thought it was Fibro. She reacted with anger, for some reason. She said Fibro was a sleep disorder, and we would waste everybody's time and send me to the sleep clinic and PROVE I did not have Fibro!
Needless to say, the sleep doc said (I'll never forget it!), "Honey, you woke up 36 times. You don't even know what REM sleep is. You have Fibromyalgia."
Ruth, the best help to get that Fibro chemistry balanced out is antidepressants, but it seems the only one ICers can take is Elavil. (I can't.) If you can tolerate the Elmiron for your IC, your life might be pretty normal. Mine has been! Don't get discouraged because you're young. Lots of people your age, without a challenge to overcome, won't accomplish as much, with as much determination, as you will. Hang in there!

Wolfe -- April and I were just talking about this! We figure since we've been hit by so many crappy health problems so young, we're getting it all over with early, and we'll be the world's healthiest 70 year olds. :)
ps -- You can order prelief at most online pharmacies and it is much cheaper than getting it at Walgreens, even considering the shipping costs. It is the same product -- real, brand name prelief, so it's perfectly safe.

Carolyn,
Funny you should say that! I've had Fibro since long before it was diagnosed, and IC for 17 years. But I honestly cannot remember the last time I had a cold, the flu, even a sore throat. I never catch anything! And I have a horrible family history. Between my two parents, they had cancer 5 times. Horrible heart history. But I'm with you and April: I got all mine over with early, and I'm the healthiest horse in the pasture! (Well, I guess wolf in the pack, right?)
Hope it goes the same for you. If you have Fibro too, E-mail me. With all this experience, I might have a couple of useful suggestions.

Hey, I just wanted you to know that I was hunting for Prelief and I saw it at Walgreens... but there were 2 bottles, partially hidden. I really had to hunt them down and go through the antiacid aisle closely or else I would have never seen them (I bought both!)
I hope you found some!
