View Full Version : My Experience With It Yesterday (Cystoscopy with Hydrodistention)

I had this first done last year to diagnose IC. Had it again yesterday because of worsening symptoms the past 2 weeks with retention and such. It was decided to be done on Monday and there was an opening 2 days later, so it was done then. Such a fast wait! Was at a different hospital where I saw my doc because he uses more than one facility.

Was really irritated with stuff at first because the nurse didn't know how to spell any of the medications and expected me to. And who's getting paid? Got asked the same questions over and over. I also had to convince them that I wasn't pregnant. Couldn't get myself to go in the cup, so that was out. I'm saving myself for marriage and I just finished my period last weekend, so unless I can get pregnant by sharing toilets with my guy roommates, I think I'm fine. With all the problems with the retention and the catheter last week, I think sex wouldn't be so appealing anyway. Well, with the right guy, but you know. :) Anyway...

I was told that the anestheologist was supposed to come at 2:15 and the procedure was to start at 2:30. 2:50 rolled around and no one came at all. So, I had to find someone for myself. Turns out that the anesthologist wasn't coming and the one taking his place was in a procedure, so I had to wait longer. Not able to pee, eat, or drink made me more cranky, as well as the nurse around at the time being mean. A friend of mine called and that was good. Hadn't talked to him in months and he let me vent. Was fun to say, "Guess where I'm at?" :) Was actually sleepy anyhow without any drugs and would either doze off or watching TV when not on the phone.

The other anesteologist (sp?) came in around 3:30. He actually apologized, which I'm not sure why since he was already going well beyond for an extra patient that day. Told me where he was and of course it was understand. He was young (my age, approx 30's) and cute. :) Even better, he was so sweet and comforting. Exactly what I needed. He gave me medicine to relax more and after awhile, showed me the stuff he was about to give to knock me out. That was the last I remembered.

Woke up in recovery and did fine. My doc spoke with me, but I can't remember what he said. Kept asking if he came by and if he gave results, which drove one of the nurse nuts. He had to leave, so I won't know much else till the follow-up next week. Was told that he didn't need to biopsy anything. The discharge nurse was super nice.

Recovery has been hard at times, but bearable. I'm sure I drove my roommates nuts being happily drugged up (was more cranky drugged up after awhile, which has been mixed up with both today and just not having a care in the world). Got food at Taco Bell and dozed off at the counter while waiting for my order and have been sleepy while biking. A bus driver today told me how he remembered me having a surgery one time, so I decided to tell him that I had surgery yesterday to see the reaction on his face. Priceless. :)

Went into retention once last night and had to self-cath. Couldn't find a hand-held mirror, so I had to call up a friend to bring one to me. Able to go today, but it HURTS really bad! I have to wear a pillow in-between my legs for awhile after. Been holding it as long as possible on purpose because it hurts too much to go. Lots of stinging and burning, etc. Hoping that will pass soon, but am thankful I can go on my own. Too exhausted to self-cath and deal with this.

Can only do bits of things at a time at short distances for the most part. Can't wait to fully recover and all that. Gotta decide what's next. Most seems to be nerve-related, but my protocol for fibro might also be in effect. Gotta love the fibro and IC. So, that's some of my experiences I am not too drugged up to remember at the moment. Fun stuff.

I hope you feel better very soon. And I hope it will help your symptoms.

Sending gentle hugs,

I'm happy you are past the procedure and hope you are feeling better soon. Your post brought back a funny memory. Many years ago A nurse was giving me very bad attitude, mean and a smart ass. I took all I could, got out of bed in my skimmy hospital gown and started down the hall with most of my rear end sticking out. She ran after me asking me "what are you thinking and where are you going?" I told her I was going to find the Hospital Administrator and find out who peed in her Cereal that morning! Big apology and change of attitude. Since I have a 65 year old butt now I don't think I would dare do that again. Sending you all my best wishes. Hug, Ziggy

Thanks guys, will post on a new thread instead with how my follow-up went today. Hope and pray you guys are doing well. I have yet to show my butt to anyone, but even with a 30-year old one of mine... :)

Wrote about the experience last week. Had the followup today.

My Uro-GYN didn't biopsy since he already knew I had IC and it was done last year by another doc.

Saw the bladder pics. The bleeding and such still there. Looked less than last year, but of course I'm sure that can vary anyhow. Everything I tried to help (Elmiron, instills, etc) hadn't. All that failed giving as much as a year for some of this stuff, yet at least I know that it wasn't and can move on.

Bladder stretched was only 500mL. Same as last year. Funny, but not funny, but my doctor thought that the doc who did it last year didn't do a good job because of how low it was. Sadly, he got the same thing and now knows for himself. He's glad that he did it for himself to see what was all going on.

Am actually going to try the interstim, but have to give it a month or so because of the procedure. The retention and frequency is way too much. Can't hurt. Can't do as much for awhile during the process that I'm used to doing, but am hoping to get the help I need. I'm friends with one of the bus drivers (that and biking is my main mode of transportation) and he told me that I could depend on him and others, which was nice. Really needed that today. He and I know some of our health issues and keep accountable with that.

Healing much better from the procedure. Not groggy anymore. Pain is same as usual. It was good being at the doctor's office today. They're easy to laugh with and are nice. I have the most fun giving my doctor a hard time (such as him never having to cathing himself or even having to use one), which the nurses get a kick out of. :) Wish I was out of physical therapy, so I could compete against him in swimming. I actually am faster than he is (I have competed for years though), which would make it more fun. :) Too bad if it was a competition of anything bladder-related, I would so be last by far.

However, my urologist is another story. He got mad on the phone for certain things (like having a CT done because he's the one who deals with the kidney stones, though that wasn't the main reason, but wanted to let him know what was found with that since I was supposed to have one next month for that anyway and wanted to cancel it) and because of his attitude, he needs to get the boot. He was good on taking me seriously, diagnosing me, and the knowledge, but his people skills and such are HORRIBLE! Doesn't let me finish speaking either. Ugh...
