Hi
I got the call from the uro. DMSO medications are in and I am scheduled for my first round this Thursday. I have been debating about doing it but after today, it is worth a try. I stopped the elavil last night and the frequency was bad today.
The plan is to do a treatment this week, wait a week, do another one at the uro office. If I am comfortable with it, my uro will allow me to do it for the next 4 treatments, 2 weeks apart in the comfort of my own home. I am hoping I can do this because it is embarassing to go in there and have someone else do it.
What can I expect from these treatments? My uro wants me to try it. He wants to stop the progression of it. I only have problems 2 weeks out of a month.
thanks
Jennifer
The first two treatments tend to be the most uncomfortable. The explanation I've heard for this is that the DMSO causes the cells to dump their toxic contents & that after a few treatments, there is less to release, so they are not as uncomfortable. I always planned my DMSO instillations for Friday afternoons, so I could rest the next day, as I tended to get a post-DMSO flare. Some patients get a garlic like odor coming from their pores & breath, afterwards, so you might want to take some gum with you. Also talk with your doctor about Pyridium or a painkiller if you do get a post-instillation flare. An ice pack can be helpful as well.
I hope the treatments work well for you & bring you relief,

My first few DMSO instillations were very painful, and I was going to say "no more" --- when I woke one morning and realized I had slept through the night for the first time in many years. That was enough to convince me to continue. DMSO helped me for several years before it stopped helping. I do suggest you verify that the DMSO is being diluted before instilling it.

I'm going through my round of treatments. I had my husband go with me the first few, I wasn't capable of driving,& it was reassuring to know I had help there with me. Hope you treatments go well. I'm not embarassed to have them do the treatments, but if I have problems I'm able to tell them instead of having to wait for them to call back.

Hi
It would be nice to fall asleep and stay asleep all night. I was up and down at least 4-5 times last night.
I called and left a message with the nurse. I would like to try and do these at home. It is insane to pay $20 for every treatment, when my medications are free. I can do them at home and pay nothing. I had to cath myself about 8 yrs ago for 3 weeks after my back surgery. If nothing has changed down there, I should be able to do these easily. I just hate going in there. I told her that with me moving and they want me to do these treatments for at least 3 months, it would be easier to do them at home.
Thanks
Jennifer

I suggest you do the first one at least in the doctor's office --- just to be absolutely certain you don't run into problems.

Hey jennifer,
I'm also having DMSOs done currently. I had three a couple months ago. Now we are doing six more (three was not enough) The previous posters are right. The first couple are a little rough. But nothing we are not used to. By the time I got to the third is wasn't so bad. I do have flares for a week or so after untill my bladder calmes down. They seemed to be helping with my IC symptoms. I hope they help for you. I usually take a pyridum right after my DMSO and run home for the heating pad or ice, depending. That usually helps. Good luck.
