When you have a cysto/hydro under anesthesia, do you have to stay overnight in the hospital?

Usually not. Before my original urologist retired, he kept me overnight, but now I go home the same day.

No, in my experience it was an outpatient surgery, tho I sure do wish they had kept me overnight!!
But for most everyone from what I have read here it is an outpatient/day surgery...usually you go in early morning and are released sometime in the afternoon...after you have given proof that you can pee by peeing at least a certain amount in a "hat" on the toilet. The nurse will measure how much you have peed. Also, it seems not to be uncommon to be given a pain med such as tylenol #3 or vicodin while in recovery, and seems that patient has to wait an hour after whatever pain med has been given before patient is released from hospital, and patient will only be released with someone present to drive them home.
Please note that even tho the patient will most likely be given a pain med in recovery and a script for pain meds to get filled to help get you through the next few days, at least, that the pain med given while in recovery will probably NOT cover the pain that you are in and you very likely may leave the hospital still experiencing some pretty bad pain.
Hydro experiences differ for each person, for some it is easier and for others quite painful...but from the posts I have seen here over the years, even after being given a pain med in recovery, seems pretty much the norm to leave the hospital in pain and to deal with possibly some pretty bad to severe bad for the following days. Not trying to scare you, just being honest. :flower:
I came home the same day after the cysto/hydro.
I was glad to have Darvocet in case I needed it, which I did for a day or two.
But, I was back to my previous level of IC within 3 days. I had the cysto/hydro on a Wednesday & was back to work on Monday.
One important thing is to make sure if your doctor takes pictures, that you get copies. I was able to take my copies to other doctors for second & third opinions.
Good luck! I hope things go well for you:)

The first cysto/hydro that I had the doctor had me spent the night in the hospital - but after that one I went home within a few hours.

I had the procedure done in a walk in surgery center. Went home a couple of hours after.

The information already given here is correct and I just had a HYDRO a few months ago. NO QUESTION is dumb. I thank GOD for this site as it has answered many question for me. Good luck with the HYDRO. I came through it fine. The Doctor gave me a few pain pills and I was back on my feet in a few days. Baby yourself for a couple of days or more if necessary. Keep in touch and let us know how things went. Thinking only positive thoughts for you. Hugs, Ziggy

I had my first hydro in Feb, 09 and I'm scheduled for my second in Aug, 09. I had it as an in/out procedure and my doctor also performed lysis of adhesions (removal of scar tissue) so I was pretty sore for a while. I went back to work within two weeks and as many have already stated, you will have some level of pain when you leave the hospital. They told me that they wanted my pain to be at a level 5 or below before leaving the hospital and they gave me what I needed to get to that........you'll be fine and good luck!!!:)

I just had a cysto/hydro/biopsy two weeks ago and I was out of hospital within a few hours. Like everyone else has said, you have to be able to pee before you leave. I took it easy for the rest of the week and was back to work on Monday. I'm soooo glad I had it done, I feel better :) Now if I can just get rid of this awful chest cold I probably picked up from the hospital  Think Positive!
