Hi, In the diet my dr. gave me it listed canned meat and fish as food to avoid. I noticed in the cookbook for IC they use canned tuna. Is this a food that usually causes a flare? Grace

The reason for the canned meat thing is probably because there are usually additives that would flare the ic. I used to rinse canned tuna and did just fine with it. Now I use starkist low sodium tuna which is just tuna and water, although I do rinse it just out of habit. I am very very food sensitive, by the way.

Good luck,
Hope

Canned tuna never bothered my IC!!

Just a little caveat though......dont eat TOO much tuna, it can have above normal mercury levels!!

Hugs,
Rachel

Canned tuna, even the kind just packed in water bothers my IC.

I tried it several times, hoping I was wrong. Maybe I'll try rinsing it.

Thanks for all your imput! I had a small amount today, not sure if it bothered me or not as I usually have some bladder/urethra problems anyways. Guess I'll try it again sometime, Grace

Thanks Rhonda! I like the phrase you have about worrying about the squalls. Since battleing IC , I have had similar thoughts. I sure have done my share of worrying over small things. I'm trying to take things as they come:) MY mind can just go in circles when I think about my health:dizzy: I would like to not only run away, but just to be able to run! One day at a time, Blessings, Grace

You might want to check the label on the canned tuna you buy. Almost all major brands now add soy to their canned tuna. Since some of us are sensitive to soy, this can be a big problem. I now buy canned tuna at a speciality store that carries water-packed tuna canned with absolutely no soy or soy products.

Annie, that is interesting!! I used to be able to eat tuna and recently, I am deciding it is a problem. But I also have recently discovered that soy bothers me.... Hmmm, I wonder? It is worth a shot!! Maybe I can have tuna afterall. I'll try it!!
Thanks for the advice!!!

I've been doing so well for the last three months. Then I decided to try this new tuna that's in a packet not a can. Well, maybe I just ate too much but, I'm irritated. Not great pain just discomfort. I'll get off the tuna and see if it helps. I'm glad you all were here for me to check with. Thanks so much.

Rowena,

Those pouches of tuna certainly look like they would be convenient but you need to read the label. The ones I have looked at contain all kinds of additives. To determine if you can tolerate packaged or canned tuna, you need to find one that contains only tuna and water. Vegetable broth is now added to most tuna and who knows what vegetables are in that?! Tomato? Soy? Onion? Most canned and packaged tunas now have soy added to them. Are you sensitive to soy? Finding pure tuna is really difficult now! Products do change so even though a brand was safe for you in the past, you need to check the label to make sure the ingredients haven't been changed. How frustrating, huh?!!!

Thanks, I've never been tested to see if I allergic to soy. It just seems like I react to everything. I'm rather limited to bread and water. Even vitamins make me hurt. I really get hungry sometimes but I'd rather not hurt.

ok I caught this one on food lol, the other day I was hungry for something different and I have Starkist chunk light tuna in water...
ingredients: light tuna, water, "vegetable broth" salt..
It did cause me some discomfort, but nothing like the strawberry sundae I stupidly ate.. any way there is a # for Questions and Commets.. 1-800-252-1587 Mon thru Fri 8:30 to 4:30 eastern time.. It is made by Del Monte food Corp.
which of course I called and it was too late.....

Sometimes we just decide that it's worth it, don't we! I just get so hungry and seems like everything I eat causes me problems.

The ONLY tuna I can tolerate is Trader Joe's canned tuna in water. It has no additives except salt. It tastes really good too!!!!

I've never seen Trader Joe's tuna. Must be an area thing.
