So I got the not being able to pee thing worked out, but tomorrow it will be a week since my hydrodistention and I am still having some pretty bad pain whenever I pee. It is not burning. It is hard to describe...but it feels like a clenching pain. It hurts when I start and when I stop. I never had pain before the hydrodistention...frequency and pressure have always been my only symptoms. Is it normal to have this pain? I'm wondering if I have some kind of infection, because I was never prescribed oral antibiotics...at least not originally. When I went back to the ER for not being able to pee, the ER doc prescribed me some antibiotics, but did say that he wasn't sure if it was a for sure infection since there is usually bacteria in urine of people with IC. He said I could skip the antibiotics if I was able to start peeing by the next day, which I could. But now I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and get the prescription filled in case there is an infection going on. I know I should probably be asking my doctor this, but I am so tired of dealing with appointments, co-pays, prescriptions....ahhh!!!

Prescriptions, appointments, copays, I hear that!
I'd call your regular doctor's office, ask to talk to the nurse, make sure they have a copy of the report from your ER visit, and see what the nurse says.
Mine have always been willing to work with me on how important it is for the doctor to see me, but I go when they really want me to.
If you're sure the ER doctor said there were usually bacteria in IC urine, I think they had it backwards. I believe it's UTI symptoms without an actual infection.

I suggest you call your doctor in the morning and ask to be checked for infection. That way you will know --- and they can do a culture to be sure you're on the right antibiotic.
Sending healing thoughts,

Maybe you can leave a specimen without having a consult?

Any time we are catheterized the risk of infection goes up. I had an instillation last week and got an infection (my first ever!). It was a different type of pain, which made me suspect that something else was going on. My uro took a sample and had it cultured and put me on antibiotics. I feel fine now, thankfully!
I was in considerable pain after my hydrodistention. I think it was about 3 or 4 weeks before I was back at "baseline." If it's not an infection, maybe your doc would be willing to give you some pain meds until the discomfort subsides. Also, pyridium or Urelle can sometimes help.
By the way, that ER doc is completely of base by saying that IC patients usually have bacteria in their urine. Urine, even in IC patients, should be sterile. If you had bacteria present he should have started you on an antibiotic. I'm always so shocked at how little some doctors know about IC and bladder pain.
Hope you are feeling better soon! :) xoxo

It sounds more like bladder spasms, that happens to me after a hydro sometimes. Have you tried hot baths, or any suggestions from your PT?

I have a feeling your having bladder spasms. I've had many distentions and I get the same thing you are describing. Whenever they do distentions and cysto's your bladder is very irritated after. I'm sure you feel pain after pelvic exams, and intercourse etc. I would give it a couple of days only and then give your Doctors office a call. I hope you feel better soon. sufferingbad
