Hello-
I am so tired of this, just as I think I have my bladder somewhat under control-something else happens. This is very embarassing, but I do need some input. I was extremely constipated (I usually eat bran muffins, but hadn't for awhile)-instead of taking a laxative (I was leary because I didn't know if it would cause a flare) I used a suppository. Well, I truly had to go and had stomach pains, but I just couldn't. So I was in discomfort for nearly an hour trying to 'go'. The next day my bladder was the worst it had ever been. I am on fentynl transdermal patch (25 mcg) and took two 30mg empracet and it didn't even touch the pain! We were having Easter dinner that night, so I didn't want to go to the hospital-plus what could they do for me with all that medication in me? What does everyone use for ruffage? I never want to be in that much pain again-and yes I made a big batch of bran muffins. Luckily, the extreme pain only lasted that day. Thank you for listening to something I am very embarassed to write about.

Alana,
Being constipated can be just as painful as having something like appendicitis so it is definitely a force to reckoned with. I can address your questions(let me say first only suggestions) as a nurse and a patient having the same daily hassels you do. Any narcotic can back you up, and bad at times. Especially the long acting forms like MS Contin, Oxycontin, and the Duragesic Patch can practically shout down the squeezing mechanims of your bowels called peristasis. The more meds, the more additive effect on poopoo production and download. Colace, which is an over the counter stool softener is not a laxative is beneficial for alot or patients. Apple with skin is a great frorm of fiber also. Bran muffins a good choice as well. Another idea Benefiber or Metamucil. Don't be embarrassed. We are all here for you and there are a few nurses out amongst who would be happy to help you translate some of the doctor-ease.

I know that when I get constipated I hurt really bad and I am prone to getting it with the IBS. I have a really high fiber diet 35-40 grams of fiber a day! I use metimusil (sp?) and take it twice a day everyday. If you are pushing it will make your bladder really mad or at least it does mine.
Hope you are feeling better.

Hi,
Drinking plenty of water can also help keep things moving. That is a hard one for me to do, because I know the more I drink the more I go, but very important. I hope you are feeling better and that won't happen again.:grouphug:
Lots of water does help. My son has started taking Benefiber for his constipation. It COMPLETELY dissolves and it has no taste. I think it is a newer brand and I have had no problems getting him to take it. You might give it a try!

Hope that doesn't happen again...if it does don't strain!!!!!!!!! Get up and walk a little and follow the directions given by others.
I take my fiber in pill form suppliment when needed....but sounds to me like what you needed was water .....I know no fun:( .
Best Wishes,

Lots of water (more than 64 oz a day), Kashi & Total cereal (high fiber), Milk of Magnesia (at night), oatmeal, exercise, a couple of prunes in the morning w/16 oz. of water. These things help. Ouch...been there. Good luck.

Tilly,
Those are great suggestions as well ! I like the Kashi cereal (works great for constipation) oatmeal and prune juice.
another good idea is lots of veggies.

I take a stool softner at night. Even though I do not go every day, when I do, I do not have to strain.
Don't be embarrassed...we all do do it.:D
Prune Juice, YUCKY! When I was a kid, my doctor made me drink it every day! It was torture.
What I do now, is drink plenty of water, and fiber........
I've spent my entire life constipated, I've been in the hospital for it! It totally sucks!
